I happened to visit on a rare day with free water taxi rides to the island which was neat. There were representatives from the county on the island providing various interpretive programs including an osprey nest viewing (from afar with a monocular), and a table with some native and non-native insects found locally and a couple people talking about them.
The park is co-managed by the state of Maryland, St. Mary's County, and "The 100." They have worked collaboratively to take good care of the island. "The 100" seem a bit pretentious and overly proud of the fact that their families were "first" to inhabit Maryland, but I didn't have any interaction with them so I can't comment on whether or not they are as dubious as they seem.

There are a few cut throughs that are not marked on the map where you can be walking through the forest and brambles. It would be a great spot for a family picnic. I'll definitely be back.
