A Memorable Camping and Hiking Adventure My recent camping and hiking trip to Swallow Falls State park Campground (Toliver loop). was an absolute delight with my family! From the moment we arrived, the experience was filled with joy, adventure, and tranquility.
Arrival and Setup (day 1): We reached the campsite in the end of May 2024 early evening by 4pm, being a weekday we were all alone (out of 65 sites) on the first day. The check-in process was smooth. Setting up our tent was a breeze thanks to the spacious and well-maintained campsite. The site was nestled among tall trees, providing ample shade and a serene atmosphere.
Camping Comforts: The campground was equipped with excellent facilities. Clean restrooms and hot showers were a pleasant surprise, adding a touch of comfort to our rugged adventure. There were also picnic tables and fire pits at each site, perfect for our evening campfire gatherings.
Hiking Trails (day 2): The highlight of our trip was the easy 1-1/4 mile hiking trails. A easy hike that offered stunning views of the surrounding 3 good water falls Lower falls, Upper falls and Muddy Creek falls. The trail was well-marked and maintained, making it easy to navigate. Along the way, we encountered tall towering trees, great river and even spotted a few deer grazing in the distance.
Evening Relaxation: Evenings at the campground were magical. We gathered around the campfire, roasting marshmallows, BBQ and sharing stories under a canopy of stars.
Conclusion: Our camping and hiking trip to the Muddy Creek Falls was a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. The pristine natural beauty, combined with the well-maintained facilities and friendly staff (Chris), made for an unforgettable experience. Whether you're an avid hiker or just looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, Swallow Falls Campground is a destination that promises joy, peace, and lasting memories.

ย ย ย Read moreOne of my most favorite places to capture weddings and elopements. The trails are nicely marked and they have options for both a more scenic challenging hike as well as an easy trail option with handicap parking that puts you super close to Muddy Creek Falls. The staircase of various waterfalls here make for a full day of fun for sure. Just be mindful you are in nature, remember to leave no trace and that yes there are snakes and bugs, and larger fuzzy forests guests as well. Also if visiting make sure to wear the appropriate footwear, the rocks are slippery and the scenic trail has many rocks and tree roots and places where mud is a thing depending on time of year and rainfall.
They offer the most lovely stone pavilion with dual fireplaces as well that is most perfect for smaller events, there is even a water pump nearby the pavilion, as well as restrooms. The restrooms are well, park restrooms and could always use some assistance in cleanliness but they aren't the worst I have seen either.
Just remember it is a State Park, so it does close once darkness hits.
They are mostly dog friendly, Memorial Day weekend they are not. That is something to keep in mind if you plan on visiting. Memorial Day weekend is usually super busy and packed and while parking is usually plentiful, that weekend.... not so much.
Also to keep in mind, once the first week of October passes it is often chilly here. Pack some coats and wear warmer layering clothes. Deep Creek is also known for random snow even in late spring or early fall. So have options packed just in case and check the weather. Cell phone service in the park also isn't the best. Especially if you are visiting from outside the area and have Verizon as your cell phone carrier, make sure to pre download your google maps so you...

It's about a 15 minute drive from the center of Deep Creek and is an easy hike that most people should be able to complete with no problem. This park contains Maryland's tallest cascade waterfall (Muddy Creek Falls) at 53 feet.
We went to the park in February, however it was warm and there was not a lot of snow on the ground. If you are there in the winter and it is cold, it is recommended that you bring some crampons as there can be ice on the trail. Bring some cash because there is a $3 charge per vehicle when you enter the park using the honor system. There is a parking area, and the trail entrance is easily found with a large sign. There are two directions as the trail is a loop, which is approximately 1.25 miles. If you want to see Myddy Creek Falls, head left and you will arrive at the falls in about a quarter mile. The park is very well maintained and there are stairs accessible to see the falls from many different perspectives. You can walk out on the rocks on top of the falls if you want to take a closer look. The rest of the trail is clearly marked and contains many interesting rock formations. You will see other falls along the rivers.
I took my family and another family with small children and everyone enjoyed the hike. I measured 1.60 miles on my hike with going out on the many rock formations around the trail. I highly recommend this park if you are looking for an outdoor activity in...
