This is a pretty neat spot! After being there you can definitely see why they picked this spot for a fort, you can see the entire town and the surrounding areas very easily. It's a self guided tour, but you can see how the rooms were set up and get have a bunch of history you can read about the place. Cool fact, MANY famous generals from the 1800s were stationed at this place, including Robert E. Lee. Overall, it's worth the drive, especially since the town of Mason is right there and also fun to explore.

Self guided tour. Exhibits were accessible but many exhibits were difficult to read as the signs were worn and letters not visible. Building is not original and the exhibits were not displayed very well. The small grounds and deck was beautiful and a good view of the town below.

The Fort was on a steep hill. The bus couldn't make it up the hill, so had to walk. Was out of breath once I reached the top. Thought about rolling down. Small fort with four rooms. A talk was given on the fort and who stayed there.

The restoration and upkeep of the grounds of the restored officers quarters are amazing. Kudos to the private group (Garden Club?). The view from the hill this is situated on is amazing! I guess I just expected more in the way of a self-guided tour of more than just one building. I think that Mason and the State of Texas could really capitalize on this area of historical sig nificance and make improvements to make it more of a...

It's an interesting little place to see if you happen to be passing, but don't go out of your way to see it.

These days, nothing remains of Fort Mason but a reconstructed stone building housing some replica exhibits. If you're into history (particularly Western Expansion), the fort is well worth stopping for. Otherwise there's really not that much to see here.

If you're going to visit, expect to be done in about...
