IMO, the beaches of Hana aren't Maui's best. Why? First off, most are choppy and rough due to their north-facing shores. Sun is at a premium as the area can be covered with clouds or the sun hidden behind Haleakala, so morning times are best for sun seekers. Soft white sand is a rarity as Maui's east end leans toward black sand beaches with the prevalent amount of lava rock landscapes.
THE BEACH: The swath of land abuts a red cinder cone cliff, Ka Iwi O Pele, on the west end and gives way to a rocky coastline headed east. The beach is a mix of dirty white sand and lava rocks, grassy areas with lots of shade and a few picnic tables. There are no restrooms. Photo bugs will love the contrast of lush greenery, black lava rocks, and nearby Alau Island. Swimming isn't recommended due to very strong under toe currents, made known by homemade signs. If you decided to ankle-wade, the water is cool and crisp, probably the cleanest of waters on the entire island.
TIP: If you're wanting to try Hawaii's infamous "huli huli" (meaning to turn similar to rotisserie) chicken, check out the local family selling plate lunches nearby. My friend bought a bird and gave approval.
OVERALL: Great picnic area...
Read moreThis beach is a great looking beach and for the right individuals it will be a lot of fun. During early September 2022 is when we went to Koki Beach Park but as soon as we checked it out we noticed how there were higher and stronger waves hitting the shores but the sand was still nice like they’d rest of the other beaches in Hawaii. So didn’t spend much time here and moved on to another destination.
So if you choose to hang out at this beach, make sure you’re not alone as the currents can be strong. There’s even a sign indicating how this beach can be dangerous and has caused drownings in the past.
Just because it’s not safe for everyone, I gave this beach a 3 star rating. I would say move on to the another beach and skip this one unless you just want to take a walk...
Read moreI hadn't heard much about this beach when researching places to visit on the Road to Hana, but my audio driving guide mentioned it as a suggested stop and I'm so glad it did!
It has both rocky shores and sandy beach and the red rocks around the beach give the sand a beautiful color. I didn't get in the water because I was traveling alone and there were a lot of signs warning about the dangers of the surf, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment at all.
It wasn't too busy when I visited, so it was very peaceful there as...
