Waiehu Municipal Golf Course — Attraction in Maui

This rating is based on my experience, not the quality of the golf course. The actual golf course was in very good shape and it offers spectacular views of the ocean and the West Maui mountains. On the day that I played, wind was not a huge factor, although I’m told that wind can greatly affect your play here.

Unfortunately, the beauty of this course was overshadowed by one of the worst customer service experiences I’ve ever had on a golf course. I was playing with a group of four, and early on in our round, course personnel came up to us and accused an individual in our group of not paying his cart fee. (He had, in fact, paid his fee). Staff came up to us at least two other times during our round regarding this issue, although we already confirmed with them that he had paid his cart fee.

Starting with the second hole, staff also approached us and asked us to speed up our pace of play, although we were playing at an appropriate pace. (We played the front nine in under two hours and finished our entire round in under four). We were playing in front of a group of three and the group never asked to pass us, although we would have been happy to let them pass.

This unprofessional behavior climaxed after we finished the ninth hole. One of the staff members named Holly who was working at the booth next to the pro shop came out as we were passing by the booth. She said that we had been warned about our pace of play and needed to start playing “best ball” to speed up. She said that if we did not speed up our pace of play we would be kicked off of the course. (Again, we had just finished the front nine in under two hours).

This unprofessional behavior really marred what would otherwise have been a beautiful day on a beautiful golf course. Although I live on the mainland, I was with three locals who regularly play golf on Maui. It was the complete opposite of the Aloha spirit that Hawaii is known for, as my local friends confirmed.

Our group spoke with Holly after the round and explained how her comments, the threat to kick us off of the course, and the other unprofessional behavior of the staff had really ruined our round of golf. She apologized to us but denied that she had threatened to kick us off the course. As someone who works in public relations, in this particular instance, I felt that her unprofessional behavior merited compensation in addition to an apology. This is a must play course. Don’t let the word Muni fool you…. This course is in fantastic condition and rivals every course on in Maui. I arrived to the airport way too early and found out there is no Delta Sky club to hang out in before our flight out. A little googling and I found this course 18 minutes away. The staff were very kind and I was able to play 9 holes with a cart. The carts are new, club house had many items to choose from and is managed by a third party. I paid for my round then had to pay separately for the cart and a ball for my collection.

The first tee greats you with a wonderful view of the ocean and well maintained course. You will forget how inexpensive 18 holes cost… I met up with Brandon who was walking alone and is also one of the many groundskeepers. He definitely has a passion for his work and was very helpful with shot placement. Brandon did advise the possibility of the bunkers being renovated in the future, however, with a little fluffing they played well. The greens aren’t rolled and you would never know… they roll beautifully and play fast. Don’t over estimate the break as it’s not as bad as you think. Golf course was beautiful! This is my first time here and I was actually excited to play UNTIL Daniel at the booth where you check in called me back after paying for my cart at the proshop informing me that he has to rerun my card again because his system doesnt show my payment went through. Showed him my card transaction from my bank and text alert. He responded “well my system doesn’t show it went through, so if you want to play i have to rerun your card again” mind you he had offered us a receipt after the initial transaction but i opted out.

I told him i am not paying again and called my card customer service and was even confirmed the transaction did go through. His response again is “well if you want to play i need to rerun the payment again”

Daniel has left me no choice but to dispute the charges once it gets posted. What a waste of time for me and someone who has to deal with the disputed charges on their end because of an incompetent and rude employee.

If the charges didn’t go through on his end why was he offering a receipt when he first ran the initial payment?

Daniel may have needed to feel tough so he proceeded to talk to me in a demeaning tone the whole time. Maybe because I’m a woman? Or maybe because i am not white? I definitely did not give in to his attitude and gladly left the golf course.
