The McBee Methodist Church, built in 1841 at the request of Alexander McBee, is named after his father and "the father of Greenville" Vardy McBee. Vardy McBee likewise is credited with founding the Conestee community in general. McBee owned the Conestee Mill down the road, known then as McBee Factory. Built in the early 1800's the mill complex is one of the oldest landmarks in Greenville County. The mill and village that grew around them are some of the earliest settled lands in the upstate. Interesting script on the historical marker out in front of the McBee Chapel. "Workers were required to attend services here." And if you didn't? You're fired? Docked pay? Ostracized from the community? The McBee chapel and the sprawling Conestee Mill are both on the National Register of Historic Places list.
