The staff at the front desk, gift shop, housekeeping, and restaurant are amazingly friendly. Ranger Mark is always available with a true smile on his face and greets everyone he encounters with such enthusiasm. Theses friendly employees are the only reason for the 5 star review. I recently encountered a Ranger, which I won’t name, that shocked me with his non chalant attitude. He was standing at the front desk so I asked him if he happened to see my children turn in the tennis rackets in the last few minutes. I was buckeling the baby in the car seat and they had not returned to the car. He simply stated “no” in a manner that seemed sarcastic to me. He should have said “ No Maam, but I will be glad to help you look for them.” Ranger Mark would have said “No, but I will help you find them.” Maybe Ranger Mark needs to be the one to interview, hire and train the Rangers. I do believe he could run the entire Resort.
I am deeply disappointed in the conditions of the camp ground and the lack of adequate restrooms and showers. There should be a playground in the camping area as well. I am a disabled person who booked the site closest to the restroom for a reason. Prior to arrival I should have been made aware of the lack of proper facilities and given a chance to receive a refund, discount, and opportunity to decide on another site. This decision should be a priority for the Manager.
The golf course is very beautiful and well maintained. Maybe the Management should put the same efforts into the rest of the Resort. The downed trees need to be cleaned up, the roads in the camp area need to be paved, the sites need to be improved and most of all, adequate restrooms need to be installed.
I went to look at Hamilton Branch, which has paved roads throughout the campground, lots of nice restrooms with handicap showers. The ladies there were friendly just like the ones at Hickory Knobb. I may be willing to give up the amenities for the better campground. I love Hickory Knobb, but the restroom situation is...
Read moreI have been coming since I was a child and I love it! Nature hikes or just sitting in the cabin, a great view of nature. The last night we saw an armadillo and watched him shuffle thru the pinestraw. While on a hike we saw a family of white tail deer that we saw again frolicking behind the cabin. Red squirrels I had never seen in person before. Missed the family of foxes, but we're going back in November :-) Fishing is off the chain! Water so clear you see the bottom of the lake at 10'. Rent a canoe for about $10 and explore the coves. Apparently there is a striped/spotted bass hybrid, so gear up on these smarties! If you like golfing, look no further! $20-$30 (seasonal) gets you all 18 holes AND a cart. Oh boy do you need it with all the gorgeous rolling hills. Even if you don't "play", get a set of cheap clubs from a pawn shop and a bag of balls. Just have fun! Also archery and skeet shooting which we will do next time since I learned you can bring your own shot gun/rifle. The best part though is the quiet peace of being in a cabin in the woods. Yet there is the hotel section with the restaurant, ice machine, pool, and gathering room. How a city girl likes to rough it! Now, this doesn't mean wear heels and forget the parka. This is NATURE! Get bug spray and check the farmer's almanac for potential forecast of troublesome weather. Many of these cabins were built in the 1970's so there is a little wear, but they are kept. No bugs or funny smells. The huuricane/flood of Oct 2015 prompted many repairs and upgrades. So if it's been a while, come on back! There is a little convenience station at the start of the park and that's about it for miles so bring snacks and drinks. The restaurant is menu and buffet style with reasonable prices (beer is available at bar prices :-$).
The staff are above and beyond. Even the room teams are smiling and happy to be there. I would be too if I got to work in such a...
Read moreMy 22-year-old son and myself went to hickory knob State Park for a couple of days just to see the sites because I'm doing the ultimate outsider adventure. So we went there so that I could get my stamp. Our accommodations or so nice! We stayed in the lodge and the view was beautiful there was a small forest area and then a lake that we overlooked from our balcony. The beds were comfortable the room that we had also had a kitchen area and a little living room area. We loved it! The people were super nice. We walked on two out of three of the trails and enjoyed that experience. My only complaint is that everything else was closed. The restaurant was closed. The snack bar in the golf shop was closed. They said it was opened but when we went there the lady told me that all she had to serve me was too hot dogs and a grilled cheese sandwich if I wanted that. Also we asked if we could rent a golf cart just to ride around the green on the designated trails and we were told no. If you are not golfing you cannot rent a golf cart that was very unfortunate as the golf course was beautiful and we would have liked to have ridden around it. My son would have liked to have done the archery but you have to give them 24 hours notice so that they can have someone available to go out on the field with you and when you're only there for two days it's hard to give 24 hours notice so that was disappointing. All in all even with the disappointments I would go back to hickory knob maybe not in the fall and the winner because it is closed up and unless you want to walk the trails which we did and loved. I forgot to mention the deer. There were deer everywhere and they were not afraid of people. You could be rather close and watch them. There are a few pictures of the deer. That...
