This beach is beautiful, quiet and secluded. We went here on a sunny afternoon in May and there was hardly anyone there.

There’s a wide open beach, and then towards the cliffs, a bunch of rocks to scramble on, tons of coastal agate, and tide pools. We even saw an otter run from the rocks into the ocean and swim near the tide pools for awhile!

Only downside is, while so much coast in the northwest is free, this beach is only accessible from Sue-Meg State Park ($18 for a car) unless you want to try and find a spot all the way down at Big Lagoon. We ended up spending the afternoon there, so it was worth it. We also stopped at Wedding Rock on our way out of the park and that was definitely worth it too!

I will also note that getting down there is a little tricky. We made it down with three little boys, but there were some places you have to scramble down in sandy turf which would be hard for visitors with unsteady balance.

If you’re looking for a beach to visit near the Redwoods, and you don’t mind the entrance fee, I would definitely...

Growing up my father would take me, my 2 brothers, and my mom to Patrick's point (the name for the Park has been changed to the original Indian Tribe name) almost every summer. I grew up in the 60' and 70's, graduated high school in 1976. Trinidad National Park, Patrick's Point, and all the beaches, points, camping areas, and the town and residents in McKinnleyville are the best. I am now 64 and the scenic drive, the town the people, the beaches, and the beautiful Redwoods I have made my place of peace, serenity,...

We have visited Agate Beach 3 times now. It is a great place for rockhounding! It is also great for photography. We take food and chairs and spend hours here. The hike can be treacherous if there were recent rains, it gets muddy and slick. And depending on you fitness level, the climb back up can be exhausting! We are older, fatter, and slower than most so it pushes us to the max. There is a bench about 3/4 of the way up and we use it every time! Despite the climb, we will return to this place anytime we are in the area.
