The Upper Falls are well worth the drive! There is a nice size parking lot, nice trails, and REAL BATHROOMS!!! You can hike all the way from the lower to the upper falls if you want to (it's quite the hike...we did not). There are stairs down to the viewing platforms. There are also other spots to see the falls (not as close) that are somewhat handicap accessible, or easier for those that have difficulty with stairs. We have been there in the summer, fall, and now in the winter! I like going later in the year just because you get to see all of the color! One of these days I would like to check out some of the trails and actually do some hiking up there. Since it's part of a State Park, you do have to pay to get in (unless you live in MI and have a State Park pass). Absolutely worth going here. Make sure you go here at least once!
EDIT: We just went up for the weekend (1-9-2021) and had our first winter experience in the UP! We were lucky enough to have decent weather for our trip. There was about 10 inches of snow at the falls. They keep the bathrooms open year round too apparently, which was WONDERFUL since there's really nowhere near there. They keep the trail clear so that you can walk to the falls. Just beware that it can be slick, so you might want to invest in something to put on your boots/shoes for traction. They also keep trails groomed for those that cross country ski or snow shoe. As always, be courteous and clean up after yourself and your pet(s) if you bring...
Read moreThis was my first time at the Falls both upper and lower & I had a friend who had been multiple times as my little tour guide (although you really don’t need one). It’s a beautiful site to see and many different viewing areas available to see the falls which were beautiful! Unfortunately when we went the lower falls we didn’t choose to really go in the water just because it was a chilly day in the high 60s maybe. There’s not technically much to do there except see the falls, which they are very beautiful and make for great pictures & there’s a lot of little trails you can walk if you want, although we didn’t do that but I know it’s miles long. The place is beautiful but just something to see and take lots of pictures of. Then there’s the typical overpriced touristy shops where you enter and exit. Beautiful place but don’t think it’s somewhere I would necessarily go back to, it’s more just one of those “MUST SEE” things. Would recommend if you’ve never been **BUT you need some type of park recreation pass registered to your car or something not sure what it was but if you have it I assume you know. Well, we didn’t have it and had to pay $16 just to see the falls 🙄 They told us the pass is good for a year to allow this specific car into any national park but I don’t necessarily think we’ll be using it unless it’s a reason to get you to come back but I’m sure some people have them and make use. I was just very unaware of this until we tried to drive in &...
Read moreI was camping at Bay View campground and decided to visit the falls for a day hike with my 1 year old lab retriever. I parked at the lower falls and toured around the viewing areas for a while - they are very well maintained and easy to access. I was contemplating the doing the full 8 mile hike to the upper falls and back which was supposed to take 5 hours when I saw a sign that said they have a shuttle to bring you back if you hike one way and dogs ride for free. I decided this would be the way to go and started out along the trail. The trail is moderate to rugged with areas of it running right along side the river and other areas climbing higher up into the hillside overlooking the river. Their were some beautiful views and the hike itself was invigorating. It ended up only taking me about 1.5 hours to hike the 4 miles as I jogged part of the way. Plenty of spots along the river for the dog to cool off and get a drink. The shuttles coming back leave every half hour which is pretty convenient - the only complaint is that it's $14 for one person for a 5 minute ride back to the lower falls. So I ended up paying $8.50 for a day pass to the state park + $14 for the shuttle - a little expensive but in the end it...
