Definitely one of the best backpacking trips I've done in PA. It was so nice that it didn't cross any paved roads where you have to play Frogger with vehicles. There were no noisy ATVs digging up the woods. And the fact that it was a loop makes it very convenient.

Only negatives were the half way point of the trail isn't too close to a water source and shelters, which are nice, aren't at a good distance from the start at Maston. If you stay at a shelter, your second day will be a much longer one. There was also a humming noise throughout the whole hike. Likely from the oil and gas site you can see from one vista. Many future generations will pay a high price from all the franking we are doing. The outdoor recreation industry contributes more to Pennsylvania's economy than all mineral and fossil fuel extraction. And without putting cancer causing chemicals into the ground and warming our planet.

Overall a wonderful hike in beautiful country. Look out for rattlesnakes, but they usually keep to themselves if...

This is a well maintained, well marked hiking/backpacking trail. Lots of camp spots and 2 lean-tos make this a very popular place to spend 2-4 days in the woods. My trip clocked at 28.4 miles. There is plenty of parking at the main trailhead at Masten CCC camp, but there are at least 2 more access points to begin the trail. Information kiosks were up to date with regulations for camping, fires, hunting, and such. The lean-tos were both very nice/new with plenty of space inside and fire rings. Note that Sprout Point lean-to is a dry site - no water. However, water is pretty reliable all along the trail. I hiked it in May during a dry spring. Another note, no trash cans, so pack in, pack out, and no privies around the entire loop including at the lean-tos. This trail is a real beauty. Views, wildlife (watch for rattlesnakes), streams and waterfalls. A...

Started in Masten and went clockwise over 3 days 2 nights. Night one camped by pleasant stream and night 2 camped along Rock run which was an amazing site. There had been a lot of rain and i got caught in a bad thunderstorm the first day and when i crossed pleasant stream the water was above my knees and flowing rapidly. There were also many small stream crossings throughout the trail. There were a few downed trees that were blocking the trail and I had to go around. The highlights were the vistas, especially sharp top, and the campsites especially around rock run. Also saw several snakes around sullivan mountain which was really cool. Overall the trail was not too hard although there were a few steep climbs and descents. It was easy to follow with orange blazes and i also liked that there were arrows whenever there was a change...

A truly WONDERFUL 28 mile loop trail, very well marked. Kudos for the trail maintenance in some of the areas of stinging nettles. The trail was widened (not in all areas, but some) with a mower or a trimmer so hikers didn't have to brush against the plants. There are many camp sites, most near a water source. There are no privys, so business must be attended to away from trails and streams. Yellow Dog Run is a *gem*. What a beautiful spot! Gently rolling terrain with a few steep inclines/descents. Take your time walking this path, and enjoy it and its history. #padcnr #leavenotrace
