We have come to the cabin every year for 10 days at a time. We all enjoy it and the wildlife is so peaceful and plentiful. Although this year we tried cabin 17 Vs 7 from previous years. Cabin 7 is in a specific "no wake zone" and most people follow this rule- it is very heartbreaking to watch your boat slam against the docks when they don't. Well we pick 7 or 17 for the more accessible amenities for our grandfather who is a disabled veteran that has a harder time walking to the boat.
With that being said cabin 17 doesnt have specific signs that say "no wake zone" or atleast if so they aren't posted enough for anyone to notice. The first 6 days of the trip we didnt have many issues of wake as it was week days as well, but we had issues of a nearby cabin with 2 jetskis absolutely going fast and then there were others out on tubes or on waterskis all pretty close to our areas. We had to watch as our pontoon boat was just slamming up against the dock for atleast 2 days. Our bass boat was fine as it was tied off on the side, but I would really love if they could improve this. Maybe adding a no wake zone if there is not one, or posting more signage to be more visible to boaters.
Other than that we always have a great trip! Neighbors are pleasant, staff is helpful, amenities are clean and helpful, we love to bring our whole family yearly for all the amazing experiences. Thank you for all you do! We...
Read moreMy family and I recently spent a weekend at Richard B. Russell State Park. We stayed in one of the cottages, which was conveniently accessible with a keypad entry – a nice touch since we arrived late.
While the park offers a decent 18-hole golf course (I'm not a golfer, so I can't speak to its quality), hiking trails left something to be desired compared to other larger parks. There were enough options to get some exercise, though. We tried our luck fishing off the pier but only managed to catch a few small bass. The beach looked nice, but the cooler weather kept it empty. Luckily, we brought our kayak and had a great time out on the water.
The cottage itself was a bit of a mixed bag. While it was adequate, the shower facilities were just average, and the kitchen was less stocked than we had expected.
Overall: If you're looking for a relaxing weekend getaway with some outdoor options, Richard B. Russell State Park could be a decent spot. For keen hikers, it might not be the best choice, but it offers golfing, fishing, and a place to unwind. Just be sure to manage your expectations for the accommodations.
Tips:
-If you're arriving late, the keypad entry on cottages is very convenient. -Bring your own fishing gear and potentially kayaks/canoes. -Don't expect luxury accommodations in the cottages – they're basic...
Read moreAnother beautiful place to hike and visit with beautiful lakes. The nature trails are easy to walk, though I am a high-mountain hiker, and I enjoyed it. There was a great sense of relaxation while hiking. Hiking, to me, needs elevation again and this park offers some of it. I did not see anyone else which was nice and peaceful. Or even if I saw other hikers, we would have waved at each other with smiles. It happened to be a weekday. I planned to visit more of Georgia State Parks in the same location to begin with. This park is in a good driving distance from Victoria Bryant State Park and Watson Mill Bridge State Park. I made my way to all visitor centers first, though I had planned well out of the info on the websites of those parks, just to get more insight of the places. Besides running into superfriendly info desk young personnel at other parks, a ranger at this park is very friendly and helpful. I ended up watching the spectacular sunset before I drove 2 hours back home. I will probably bring more people to HIKE/visit the park in the future. Meanwhile, I am trying to complete the list of Georgia State Parks......That will...
