This is going to be one of my most in depth reviews because I feel this place is very underrated for how close it is to Bangor and how pretty it is. If you are looking for hiking do not come in the spring, many of the trails will range from wet to flooded and make it either an unpleasant hike or not doable. Any other time of the year it will be a very enjoyable hike (if you bring bugspray and or snowshoes depending on the season). If it is your first time visiting the meadows, the best trail in my opinion is the Carter Meadows Trail which has a nice outlook platform at the end to give you a good look at the scenery. More information on the other trails can be found on their website. For kayaking/canoeing it is quite the opposite of hiking in the meadows, the best time to go is in Spring. Going later then spring risks the water being to low to access the center of the Sunkhaze stream and could lead to a disappointing trip out there. The access point to the stream is called "Ash Landing" which you should be able to google for directions. The parking lot is about 0.15 miles away from the kayak/canoe put in place so keep that in mind if you can't carry your vessel that distance (the trail is also kinda hidden behind the information sign in the parking lot, I got lost my first time). Be weary of logging trucks barreling down any of these dirt roads and if you see one coming just pull off to the side and let them pass, they go very fast. Hope this review was helpful because this place is truly special and i am glad it is protected. For more information check out their website which has more information on all the recreation...
Read moreSignage and address on their website (and here) is worse than useless. So bad, we did not even get onto the land. We did come across one trail head with parking for one vehicle (already used) but could not believe that was the official entrance. Their address listed on the website is for their headquarters. Access road where we found the trail head is not recommended for a small car, badly rutted. Gave up and had a great day at Hirundo instead.
I have now updated the...
Read moreWonderful refuge with actual hiking trails (which can be a challenge to find in a wildlife refuge). Three trailheads are found along the county road that borders the refuge to the south. The county road is partly unpaved with some washboarding so be aware. There were many mosquitoes but we were fine with just some bug spray and long pants and long sleeves.
So much beauty and solitude. Would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a great...
