This has to be the most scenic trail I have ever been on. Great weather for August, was 65°F at the top when we were there. Amazing. We took the trail all the way down to Muir Woods. Almost 5 miles round trip. Three adults and 2 kids made the trip in 3-4 hours. You go downhill at first, then climb back up. Good well kept, and defined trails. Just watch out for roots. A good pair of hiking shoes will help you a lot on steeper areas. Saw some lizards towards the top of the trail on some rocks. Saw a deer family at the bottom in Muir Woods. Lots of chipmunks by the gift shop area.
The gift shop closes at 5pm in Muir Woods. Missed it by a few minutes, so no snacks for the trip back up... Drought and water shortages, had most of the bathrooms closed.
The climb back up had some steep parts but wasn't too bad. Once you get to the top of the trail you could walk over to Mountain Home Inn and get some food there. They have a pretty good selection of food. Good views of both sides of mount Tamalpais from the outdoor...
