We decided on our last trip to stay at the Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park Cabins. I was especially impressed with their pricing, especially after arriving to find how beautiful the place was. Our cabin was on a piece of land that jutted out into the lake, and so we had views of the lake from 3 sides of the cabin. All of us were pleasantly surprised to find that we had the use of an aluminum row boat for the duration of our stay, and it was included in the price of the cabin rental! We spent a portion of each day (we were there a total of 3) rowing around the lake, just taking in the beauty and dong a little fishing as well. We decided to forego eating out since there was a fully functional kitchen as well as a grill for cooking outdoors. This is the first vacation I have been on with my family in the last 18 years that we actually just hung out in one spot for 3 days solid, without feeling the need to go exploring elsewhere. (Basically the only RELAXING vacation I have ever been on!) We were even visited the first night by an albino racoon, who was just as curious about us as we were about her. The next night she brought her babies to visit, but of course she didn't venture as close to us with them in tow as she had by herself. The staff was helpful and very courteous! I would definitely return to spend time here with my family again. (I am including a panoramic picture taken from the front door of the cabin, as well as some...
Read moreWe stayed at Meeman-Shelby State Park Campground in a 30’ travel trailer. DO NOT USE GPS with the location of “Meeman-Shelby State Park” to get here if you are trying to get to the campground. Use 7812 Bluff Rd, Millington TN to get to the campground!! If you use “Meeman Shelby State Park” you will get to the park, but you will end up on a very narrow road with your rig going from the south side of the park to the north side where the campground check-in is located. The drive is beautiful, but narrow. you don’t use GPS, from US Hwy 51 take Hwy 388/N Watkins Rd (4-lane) North until it dead-ends. Turn left onto Locke Cuba Rd and go to the stop sign with the “General Store” on the corner. Turn right onto Bluff Rd and about a mile down on your left is the Park Entrance. This is a very beautiful park with lots of outdoor activities. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The campground sites are heavily wooded with lots of shade. Water pressure was very good at 60lbs. There is absolutely no cell phone/data service at the park. We were ok with this, just be aware. The downside to this heavily wooded campground is the large mosquito population. Using mosquito spray did not seem to affect them, they came in droves. Opening the camper door briefly to get in or out resulted in a hunting expedition for the numerous mosquitoes that came in. The mosquitoes also invaded the bathrooms/showers. This required a dance to...
Read moreQuaint, but unkempt and a bit run down. We booked site 28 online and it sounded like it would be sufficient. Boy was I mistaken! The pad was long enough, but not WIDE enough for our rig with two opposing slides! We had to pull very far forward on the pad so that our left slide would clear the power and water risers which forced us to park our big 1-ton dually on the grass next to the pad. (Sorry for the muddy divots!) Additionally, the pad was pretty unlevel. A pretty steep incline. Manageable, however. What WASN'T manageable was the two foot drop off at the side of the pad! How utterly dangerous. I'm flabbergasted that a state safety inspector hasn't shut that site down. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen! (See pictures.)
Security was really lacking. Anyone could just drive in and drive around the campground. And they did! Saw a beat-up van driving around a few times looking like they were scoping the place out. It's not necessarily in a bad neighborhood, but it's within 20 minutes of Memphis and Millington, so it would be easy pickin's for thieves. Keep your belongings locked up!
Oh, and if you're going to have a FOUR hour buffer between check-out and check-in, at LEAST use that time to clean up the sites a bit! Couldn't even be bothered to clean out the fire pits. We were there for three nights and didn't see a single maintenance person.
We wouldn't stay at this...
