(this is a very late post from our visit in summer of 2022)
What a gem of a museum that we happened upon during our recent visit to the Millsville, NJ area! We love finding local museums and this one did not disappoint. We were given a short introduction of the museum by a nice lady, then we walked around all of the rooms at our own pace. Every room is PACKED with so much history, and each exhibit and display is well-organized. Afterwards I learned that it actually IS more than 1 museum!
We loved all the different displays. The museum really takes the time to pay tribute to so many groups that have served in the military, including Japanese Americans, Tuskegee Airmen, Women in the military, all across multiple wars. You could easily spend a whole day here just absorbing all of the history and artifacts. The collection is just spectacular!
While we were there we were given an impromptu tour by Mr. Ed, a volunteer and Vietnam Veteran. (Tours can be scheduled in advance but we didn't schedule one, we were just lucky enough to chance upon one). What an honor and pleasure to be in his presence as he let my 2 boys into the display vehicles and explain (very patiently) all of the features and functions of each. He spent lots of time telling us about the history of the vehicles and in particular we spent a good amount of time in the flight training center.
I can't say enough about this great museum. The restoration efforts are fantastic and you can see the passion and care that the employees put into maintaining and, even more importantly, IMPROVING this place.
Also to note, restrooms are available and clean, as is water. Located right on the Executive Airport, so you can also catch small planes coming and going. Gift shop is small but reasonably priced. Truly a great place to visit and we would definitely come back, especially when they have their air shows and other events! Probably wouldn't recommend for under 5 years unless you just want to see some airplanes outside.
We became members and receive occasional mailings with updates. They have since acquired some new vehicles and we look forward to making another visit...
Read moreI was here at the Millville Army and Airfield Museum as part of my job as Children's Librarian of Bridgeton Library. We've been doing on location story times for virtual viewing since we can't have any in-person programming due to covid. The lovely folks who work at MAAFM were kind, welcoming, gracious, generous, and informative. This is a do not miss museum. This place is incredible-it has so many interesting and authentic artifacts primarily from World War II and other wars that the US has fought in as well. In order to do this incredible museum and their wonderful displays some justice you need to come visit this place multiple times. I'd like to thank Lisa Jester and Joan Legg very much for their time, patience, informative interviews and heartfelt, eye-catching displays. The museum, especially Joan, has worked incredibly hard on linking the artifacts with actual people so you feel a real connection and backstory to a uniform or a kit or a picture. This makes the experience of coming to this museum more authentic and deeply enriching as you get to know the lives lived and sacrifices made. It's an incredible collection and I'm very happy to have had the chance to be there both as a librarian and as a museum and history lover. I am sure I will return...
Read moreThis place right here? This place is New Jersey's best kept secret. It's got something for everyone. Of course, airplane nerds, like myself, will love the aircraft displays, the models, the aviation atmosphere. Ah, but there is so much more! History buffs will love the stories, the relics, the personal stories attached to the amazing artifacts. Veterans will appreciate the sacrifices of the soldiers. Kids will love the friendly, close nature of the displays.
It's not super small yet it isn't huge. It's a good size so as not to become boring or overwhelming. Tons of history, some of which you can touch. They've got things here you won't see anywhere else.
Most of the displays center around WW2 since that's when the airfield opened. But there are displays from other eras as well including Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm. And, as I said, much of it you're allowed to touch which just brings everything to life as a kid, even big kids like me. Where else can you go and touch an engine out of a P-47 or a gun from Vietnam?
This place is an absolute treasure. You won't regret...
