I'm reviewing from the perspective of a climber.
I've been to this park 4 times to climb. Of those 4 times I've climbed 2 times.
The first time it had rained going on a week prior and it was still damp so it was closed. Bummer but fair didn't call ahead.
This last time I did call ahead and the phones said it was open. And then the sign said it was open. But then lady at the desk informed us 20 fire fighters had come in and closed the whole area (all 80 routes) to do training. And there's no way we could've known before driving an hour and a half because nothing was updated.

Read moreWe absolutely love this park. The trails are very diverse and always well kept. One of the many reasons we chose Mineral Wells to purchase our first home! The staff is always super friendly and extremely helpful- Our reptile rescue Living Wild Outside treats domestics and wildlife. We got a call from the local animal shelter about a vulture. Because I am a subpermitee under Blackland Prairie Raptor Center it was legal to release into our care. We desocialized it, trained it for climbing and gliding, and then released at the spillway in the state park (with their permission) to acclimate into the local group of vultures that currently live there to be taught their ways. This was an awesome happy ending and Im super grateful to the rangers and nature interpreter for all of their help. You guys...
Read moreThis is one of my absolute favorite Texas State Parks. I love the small creeks that run throughout it. I love all of the beautiful wild flowers, I couldn't stop taking pictures of all of them. The store has anything you may have forgotten or extras you may want. The screened in shelters have beautiful views of the water, if you can get to them, because of the flooding. The day use tables have grills that can be used to grill or just enjoy a meal at. They have paddle boats, canoes & kayaks you can rent. There's plenty of room for fishing. As well as a nice sized area for swiming. There are deer here, they are just pretty good at blending in, but they're still cool to see. This is a must visit State Park they are...
