Farm Island on Eagle Lake along the Allagash Waterway to explore the Ghost Trains and Tramway of the Eagle Lake and West Branch Railroad.
The railroad was built to transfer pulpwood between Eagle Lake and Umbazookus Lake then taken south down the Penobscot River arriving at paper mills in Millinocket and East Millinocket. The trains were only operational for about 5 years between 1927 and 1933 when the Great Depression happened.
When operations stopped the locomotives were parked inside the “Engine House” with the intent to resume operations after the great depression was over, however by that time it was realized that it was more cost efficient to use trucks to haul the wood and the trains became obsolete.
In the 1960’s the site became popular for snowmobilers as it was the only way to reach them at the time once the lakes were frozen over in the winter season. Sometime in 1969 the engine house and wooden cab from engine #1 were destroyed in a fire leaving both locomotives exposed to the elements.
