It's been just over 6 years since we visited Walnut Grove and the Ingalls dugout site (for the 45th cast reunion). If you're a fan of the LHOTP books or TV series like we are, this is a must see! I like to think the rock we stood on, may have been the very same rock Laura, Mary, et. al. stood on all those years ago. Although there was some modern-day farming, likely the area very much resembles that which the Ingall's would have experienced maybe with less prairie grasses. When we went Plum Creek was very mucky as seen in the photo. My guess is that was due to the historic flooding one year prior. I'd like to see photos of how it look nowadays! If you go, and especially if you bring kids, take your time, don't rush. Wonder and ponder. Read the plaques. Imagine the old days. Consider life in a dug-out. Take in the scenery and foliage. TAKE PHOTOS! Then as the years go by, your memory of the visit (as you re-read or re-watch LHOTP) will likely, in some mysterious way, exceed the actual experience. For me now, it was magical. Ok, maybe that's a little over the top, but it was certainly a cherished memory.

My wife and I decided to take the Laura Ingalls Wilder Highway on our way to the Blackhills. And stopped by this site mid morning on a Sunday. We enjoyed driving back to see the setting. We were the only ones there. I hiked around one of the meadows and have never seen more monarch butterflies at one time. I really appreciate that the owners give people the opportunity to see the site and imagine life in the past.

This site was a nice little walk in the country. Google maps tried to take us straight to the creek and have us walk in through a field. The farmer who owns the property has made a path. Look for the Ingalls sign by the road and drive in. Pay for your parking and you can walk the site and be immersed in the descriptions from the books.

what an amazing experience to be able to come to the original dugout site and walk where laura and her family walked! thank you to the property owners for keeping it open and fixing it up after the flood a few years ago! they have the big rock labeled and we took our shoes off and dipped our toes in!! i also brought my childhood copy of on the banks of plum creek and i dipped it in the creek(never saw anyone do it here but ive seen other people do it other places so i had to!) this is a must visit for sure if you are a fan of both the books and the show!! they accept cash or have a qr code to pay for the entrance fee which makes it super easy! the drive down is easy to find and theres a small parking lot and picnic tables! we learned this at the musem but they would walk to town from the side of the creek they lived on so they would not have to cross the creek and get...
