I guess we were too late for sunflowers, we didn't see anything like what people posted just one month ago. Everything was so overgrown and impassable! We attempted the confluence trail (on foot since it's closed to traffic) and only got so far and road was covered over with water. Tried another trail and it too got so overgrown it was impassable. We weren't dressed or prepared for pro hiking, just for a walk to the sunflowers. Which we never found. Visitors center was closed and deserted ( and not very well kept around the building) , at 3 on a Sunday. In our opinion, this could be a real gem if it was just kept up. Very disappointed since we drove over an hour. I will say this, we enjoyed all the butterflies flying around and that fresh, clean country air!

Enjoyed the sunflowers along the gravel road. The sunflower fields are small spots in what seems to be a never ending conservation area. We visited on weekday and the field was filled with photographers and visitors. We drove all the way to the river and it was quite relaxing to watch. A word of caution though! The roads have few dips and bumps, it’s easy to miss signs when you are almost certain to drive in dust especially if you are following another vehicle. Have fun !

By mid-late August the sunflowers are shrunken and dying, so go May- July for those. Our Modoc website could be a bit more accurate and detailed in regards to the Columbia Bottoms- even listed as closed on Google during a Tuesday during daylight hours. It was a beautiful area. Wish we would've known to come earlier for the sunflowers. August is likely too late even though the website says May-Nov. Go earlier in the season.
