Great park. This place is huge. There are 3 campgrounds, a nature center, a restaurant/lodge and a park store. Marc at the entry station was extremely friendly and helpful. This park does not have water hookup at your site, so you will need to fill up as you enter the park. There is a fresh water spigot at the dump station to campground 1 as well as many places throughout. Our pad site was very level and it appeared all the others were as well. We felt the spacing was closer than some parks, but definitely not terrible. We were able to get 4 TV channels with our antenna, but none came in clear enough to watch. There was great WiFi reception at our site, so we were able to stream easily with our smart TV. Phone reception and data was also very good. We walked every trail except the Fire Tower trail. Pibern has some steep steps, lots of spider webs and a narrow walkway. Devil’s Kitchen is wonderful with lots of beautiful rock formations and very few spiders. There are some steep steps, but not difficult for average hikers. Deer Leap is a fantastic hike up lots of steps to an awesome overlook of the fish hatchery. It’s a tough climb, but well worth it. The wooden walkway is especially nice. River Trail is the easiest walk in the park. It’s a lovely and cool walk along the river to the amphitheater. The CCC built this trail originally and it remains a beautiful trail. Eagle’s Nest has beautiful scenery on the trail, however there are very steep climbs with loose gravel. Part of this trail is on the service road, which we found extremely difficult to walk on as it has large loose gravel and is very steep. You should probably be an experienced hiker to tackle this trail. The final trail we did was Spring House. It’s a moderately easy trail and very short. The view is excellent and it’s easily reached from the restaurant parking lot. It only took us 17 minutes to complete. The restaurant was open and prices appeared to be very good for their offerings, however we did not eat here, so I cannot comment on the fare. Overall great park. We would...
Read moreRented a cabin for 3 days here. Hatchery cabin #9. You would think for the price of $242.27 per night it would be close to a first class accommodation. For that price I expected a clean and well appointed cabin. Far from my expectations. Dusty and dirty. Cobwebs behind and underneath all the furniture, dirty dishes, refrigerator missing parts inside (could not use shelves in the door). Burn holes in the couch and chair. The carpet looked like it belonged in a barn. Bath tub looked gross, it held water along the top ledge next to the wall where a formed in soap holder was. So many cobwebs on the porch made ya not want to set outside. The stairs leading up to the cabin from the parking lot were another story. Definitely holdovers from the 1930’s Civilian Conservation Corps. Unsafe by today’s standards. Steep and uneven. Poison ivy growing right next to hand rails leading up to cabin. Seemed to have some kind of gnat infestation inside, kept killing them but they just called in reinforcements. Zero stars on the cabin. Avoid them, stay somewhere else.
However, the linens were clean and towels were plentiful. The hot water was hot and enough for 2 showers in a row. The cabin had WiFi access that was reliable. They did have a television hooked to the internet and it worked well. The staff everywhere in the park were friendly and very helpful. Overall the park was great. We enjoyed all the other amenities in the park. The fish cleaning station was first class. The store was very well stocked and the staff...
Read moreI have been coming here each year for about 10 years now. The park has gained popularity over those years as well. The summer weekends are not really enjoyable for fishing anymore because a lot of people come to fish. Not much room to fish during weekends. Show up early or you will not have a decent enough spot until past noon. I will just come back during the week!
Also, 2023- now, there have been numerous camp ground updates such as brand new campsites with full service (sewer, water, electric, wifi, nice concrete pad, etc.), but none of the cabins I have stayed in have been updated. The only thing you could consider an "update" was they put in roku boxes and SMALLER tv's. You're basically watching your tiny office computer monitor from 10 feet away now. I get it, you're supposed to be fishing.... boohoo. The cabins are good, don't get me wrong, but it seems like they could have been updated a long time ago with little cost. Way less cost than installing those nice full service campsites... Time for a camper I guess. Don't spend your money on the nearly $300 a night cabins, it's not really worth it as of now in my opinion.
Zone 3 is such a small zone now. With all the park expansion, no fishing area expansion has occurred...
