The Visitor Centre is located just after entering the Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands National Park. Opening hours vary based on the season but were 9am to 4pm during our early April visit.
Note that there is a very good NPS website for Canyonlands NP which includes Visitor Centre services. It is advisable to research and review park details there while scheduling future visits to the Park.
At the Visitor Centre, there are rangers providing updated information regarding trail status and campground availability. This is also where you make reservations for permits for backcountry activity.
There is a small gift shop section, clean bathrooms and water refill stations at the Visitor Centre. You'll find general trail information as well as a small but interesting exhibition section regarding the unique geology and wildlife here in Canyonlands.
In the end, while smaller than visitor centres of other Mighty Five National Parks like Arches, we found the Island in the Sky Visitor Centre to be a useful stop to make for picking up maps and general information necessary to maximise your...
Read moreOur trip plan was spoiled due to the misinformation(This situation might be only in winter). On day1, it was weather report wrongly shown as no snow at all when it snowed there the whole day. We have to go around 20 miles from the main highway for the visitor center only to find nothing is visible to go inside park. We were told to call next day to check on park conditions. When called in morning, someone answered and told the snow plowing truck came and cleaning roads inside park. When we drove to the park entrance we found that roads were closed and they told the park would most likely not open for the day. Although the persons in the visitor center were friendly and happy to help, trip got wasted due to the misinformation. On the other hand, snow in Arches national park was cleared continuiosly. Both parks charge 30$. It's better if Canyonlands also was maintained properly. And it's also better to arrange a display at the highway diversion stating the condition of the park as it would be clear to the people not...
Read moreNice National Park. Went to see the meteor impact crater (Upheaval Dome) and the overlooks. Requires a combination of hiking and driving to see each of the areas. Definitely recommend going early in the morning when it's cool. Hikes require some hiking over steep rocks and stairs. Bathrooms throughout the park. Park is split in three districts. I went to Island in the Sky and the Needles districts. I did not go to the third district as it's off road only. Island in the Sky is the best and most visited. Needles is okay. It only has two overlooks. However the drive into Needles was awesome and be sure to stop at Newspaper Rock to see the petroglyphs. There is a 90 minute drive between the two districts. Also, Dead Horse State Park is adjacent to the Island in the Sky District. Definitely a must see while visiting as it shows how the Colorado River impacts Canyonland. It cost $20 bucks to enter...
