A short and spectacular hike between tall red rock peaks. Unlike some canyons, the walls are not too steep, and most places it is not too hard or dangerous to scramble up and explore along the side of the trail. It is also a good way to spend time in more solitude, as the trail is narrow and can get crowded. The path is pink or orange sand, and narrows toward the end. The final destination is after a sharp left and contains a pool of water, something not uncommon in the depth of canyons, where the terrain can collect water and is shielded somewhat from the sun. You can scramble up the rock to the left of the pool for an amazing view. If you continue straight, instead of taking a left to the pool, you will get to a less trafficked end of the canyon, which seems even more shielded and collects moisture in the sand. Like other canyon areas, it gets a little greener than the open desert, even having patches of grass here and there. The petroglyphs are mostly high up, and aren't too hard to see if you are looking for them. I saw a few lower down, but I always wonder about their authenticity, as people come along and scratch stuff into the rock for fun. One interesting one high on the rock was of what looked like a family holding hands. Others include what look like goat, lizard, and water.

Easy hike in a beautiful canyon and with some of the nicest petroglyphs you can find anywhere can be found here. It's definitely a to do when visiting the park even though it can be tough to find parking on a busy weekend and when it isn't too hot out. There are restrooms here as well as a nice picnic area across the road so you can make this a mid point in your day of exploring. My main reason for not giving this hike a full 5 stars is because of the parking issue and the crowds I often find here.

Have hiked this trail several times, most recently in December 2024 (previously November 2018). When I compare photos of the petroglyphs, it is good to see they seem to be hanging in there. Biggest difference is the varied time of day each photo was taken. I didn't see any sheep this time, but have encountered them in the past.
