It would be nice to know more about this place. Went on a Sunday... and it was a little creepy - almost abandoned. But was interesting and odd, and charming...
So - Follow up. Went up with my son today. Someone came out and said "Hello" - it was Ron, the owner. He was extremely nice. And the area is open to the public - knowing that I didn't feel like I might not supposed to be there. So, with his blessing in hand we looked around a little more than I did last time. They have a Zebra, and some huge horses, rabbits, turkeys, and all kinds of stuff. He also filled us in on why it was built. I had always thought you had to be there at dusk, but if you are there at solar noon (not sure of the real term) the sun aligns through two slits in the pole in the middle of Stone Henge. When it does the shadow points true north. That was awesome to learn. Now I know I can go, I'll probably go back with a better camera.
A few more pics posted from this visit. If you look at the top of the henge, you will see yin/yang markings - E and W. The southern cross to the South, and the dipper to the north. If you look closely at the pole shadow as it points to the Alien you can see the white mark in the shadow when everything lined up - the shadow is then...
Read moreThis really is a hidden gem of stop and one that I would highly recommend making! My wife and I originally came out to see the replica Stonehenge (which is awesome) but ended up spending well over an hour wandering the grounds and checking out all the amazing and cool stuff they had everywhere and we could have stayed even longer if we had the time. If you have kids, they'll love seeing the camel and other animals and of course, there are things like historic old trains, firetrucks, an old stamp mill that looks as if it could still run. However, one of the prettiest new additions here is the little church with stain glass windows made out of old mid century modern ash trays - it simply is wonderful to see. Obviously, I would highly recommend you give this place a look but you need to make sure to check in at the front gatehouse. There is NO FEE to visit this fun filled place but you need to remember that it is a private residence and to be respectful of their rules. Please don't be 'that guy' and ruin...
Read moreWe noticed this place on our route check the night before travelling, and decided we’d stop. Almost missed it, but we knew there was an eagle at the gateway, so did a quick about turn. Thank you Google Street View.
The lady on the gate was most helpful checking us in, advising where to park, and what we shouldn’t do. She also gave us a lot of information about the site, what it was made up of, etc. She also caught up with us as we were wandering round to check our onward travel plans, giving us gas station locations (one in 30 miles, one 8 miles after that, then nothing until Ely…), and just some pleasant chat, with us sharing our amazement that such a place exists in the middle of nowhere!
Great place to stop, wish we’d have given it a bit longer, but if you can fit it into your trip, do so. It’s a great stop for a decent leg stretch, interesting, amusing, and probably one of those ‘only in America’ moments.
Loved it, and especially grateful to the lady who works there for her...
