I visited Selective Seconds at about 2:20 PM on 9/18/2024. I live nearby and had wanted to visit the store on a few occasions, but their schedule generally does not align well with my schedule. I have recently been undergoing cancer treatment and had time away from work during the day for once. I thought I felt well enough to check out the store and maybe find some affordable and stylish clothing that would fit my changing body.

Upon entering the store, I noticed it had a pleasant smell and was clean. Nobody greeted me, but I was not bothered by that. I realize I look a little feral today. I noticed several items that were reasonably priced.

I browsed with the intention of finding tops that were soft and potentially had buttons or snaps. As I browsed, I overheard the employees and a customer discussing a homeless woman who had wandered across the street. One employee boasted about giving the woman her drink and food and now she didn't have any. At first, I thought, that was a kind and thoughtful gesture, but then thought that good works should stand for themselves. I still was not bothered enough to leave or anything like that.

As time went on, one of the employees asked the customer about a person they work with who is apparently trans. All three women discussed the difficulty in understanding how to properly address a trans person: "It?", "They, I guess?" and finished with saying, "I know it's bad, but that's just how it is now." They further discussed that in the Pacific northwest they call people "humans" instead of he or she. "Go ask that human over there for directions." This led to discussion of a person breaking out car windows and the police in the northwestern city being unable or unwilling to intervene. I thought it was already highly offensive that they were calling trans people "it" and now equating being trans as a root cause of property damage some how was even more offensive.

Then, one of the employees said that locally, Orion schools were talking about putting in litter boxes for students who think they are cats. She assured the others that this was true.

At this point, I was in disbelief. There is absolutely no proof that this urban legend has happened in any school in the US. A simple google search will determine the blatantly false nature of this story.

At this point, I decided I would never give this store money, nor would I purchase anything here. I think I was sticking around to hope that one of them would say ANYTHING remotely redeeming. But, I know if they are talking in such ignorant ways in front of strangers that their conversation in front of others they are comfortable with could only be worse.

It isn't hard to treat people with a little grace, dignity, and respect. Nor is it difficult to refrain from spreading ridiculous bigoted gossip.

Save your time and spend your money...

I’ve only been to this store once and it was back probably about 7 years ago. I called to see if they buy clothing out right or only consignment before driving to the store. At which time she told me they do both. As soon as I get there I asked her what all their process was to selling with her, if she needed my ID or not. I told her I was just going around trying to get some money for my gently used clothing since I went through a 90 pound weight loss and her store was my next stop. She asked me if I had gone to Plato’s Closet and I said yes. As soon as I said yes she said she doesn’t take anything that Plato’s Closet passes on due to that being her store policy. When I politely asked why she responded with “because they are a multimillion dollar company who rip people off. If we were your first choice you would have came to us first” as she said this she lifted up a few prices of clothes and put the lid back on. Terrible experience for someone just trying to get some extra money and not expecting to be lectured for going to another company. Treating people with kindness...

Owner lies about her bags, saying they are real designer brands when they are counterfeit, or just not telling people they are fake at all. She preys on ignorant, naive people. When you left a negative review on her fb page, the owner would personally message you to berrate you, and then refuse to give money back. SUPER UNPROFESSIONAL. Not to mention, she removed the review section on Fb because of all the people commenting on her unethical business practices. The slimiest business. She even went so far as to lie to people about customer interactions. I’ve never met a business owner so awful. Her friends even messaged me to theeaten me to take down my post about her counterfeit bags. I went from loving this store, to hating it in twelve hours. Sorry guys, you’re better off going to Plato’s Closet...
