This place is amazing. I went here mainly because I wanted to go on a last camping trip with my 13 yr old dog and it's a place shes never been before. She used to go everywhere with me and we went hiking and camping at primitive campsites. She has arthritis and can only do so much. The Monahans isn't bad for senior dogs. There are smaller hills for them to enjoy or relax. Though when the wind blows it'll hit their face so you will be used as a wind blocker. There was a huge thunderstorm in the distance that blew alot of wind and thankfully it didn't go over us. It was a beautiful lighting show though! Definitely come here when it's not too hot because of limited shade especially for your senior dogs. I went on November 2nd and the night wasnt too cold and was manageable. The day wasnt too hot and is manageable just make sure to hydrate and cool down in the shaded pavilions or your tent. The night sky is amazing, and I can only imagine what it's like with the Milky Way arm more visible. There is some light pollution in the distance but it isn't too bad. The sand is soft and is fun to climb on. Over the larger sandhills there are even more dunes and it appears to be endless. You can tent camp and RV camp and the restrooms have showers. There are also picnic areas next to the campsites that you can sit at which are right next to the sandhills. These dunes are not as large as the ones in Colorado but they are definitely fun to go on and you don't have to hike an arm and a leg to reach the top and have a view. There is always something amazing to be on top of the Dunes as the sun sets. It's surreal and makes you feel you are on a different world. Same goes for the sunrise before the sun is fully above the horizon. This will definitely be a place to revisit and explore again.
The only downside would have to be the trains passing by every now and then as well as highway traffic but it...
Read moreTent-camped in December. For another winter stay in a tent, I'd choose site #25 for its privacy from other campers, greater distance from the day-use picnic area, yet close proximity to the restroom just around a corner. Downside, it has no shade structure, so the site would be a challenge in other seasons. Some sites share one ramada, with their picnic tables pushed together. One loop of the campground is next to the day-use picnic area, which means folks can slide easily down toward the loop's campsites, so if you're out for the day, it makes sense to take reasonable care to reduce temptations for curious visitors of all ages. The campground is a busy one, even on chilly, overcast December days. A goodly number of very large rigs. Clean restroom/shower rooms. There are two spacious accessible/family shower and toilet rooms with their own entrances in the restroom/shower house. The visitor center is a visual feast, both in its interior and exterior design, and in the panoramic views from within. The park superintendent and all three staff who I engaged with during my stay were welcoming and helpful. The proximity to the interstate and a truck stop is a lagniappe, making it easy for one-night-only campers to swoop in and out of the campground easily. The only cell service I caught in the campground was at unpredictable moments, when a single bar emerged, just sufficient enough to text a few basic messages and read emails before it disappeared again. Better cell service is outside the visitor center; there's wifi inside the...
Read moreWe stayed one night at Monahans Sandhills SP campground in site #1. We camped in a 36’ 5th wheel trailer. As this trailer is tall it was kind of a concern that the archway one must drive through to enter doesn’t have any height info posted. It’s kind of hard to accurately guess height, that’s why bridges and tunnels have this info posted. Site 1 is listed as a pull through site online but it is not a pull through site as it is divided in half making 2 sites that share a shelter. It’s kind of hard to pull through when another camper is occupying the second half (site 2). Most of the back in sites at this campground are pretty much perpendicular to the road instead of angled which may cause a problem backing in for longer campers. The site lengths listed online might be wishful thinking as they appear shorter but it’s hard to say as the pavement is partially covered in sand. The road in the campground is wide enough to easily drive a longer camper through. We went to the site first and then walked to the building to check in, as there is no room to park a large trailer in the parking lot there. With AT&T cell I was able to make and receive calls and texts from the campground. There were no issues with the water and electric connections. We didn’t use their dump station or bathrooms. It was incredibly windy while we were there. The campground is very close to the interstate making it convenient for an overnight stay but I would only stay here again if I were in a...
