This is more of a historical house than a “castle”. Most of the rooms are either roped off or closed behind locked doors. There is a lot of information taped on the walls and artifacts. We went with a school group on a field trip and our guided tour that was supposed to be an hour was 5 minutes after which we were told we could explore the house on our own. However, for the next 30 minutes I listened to our guide Margaret do nothing but yell at and scold children. She even grabbed one of my children by the shoulders and got down in her face to correct her because she was dancing in the hallway (not in a wild fashion- just being a 6 year old kid). She also got after a group of teenagers that was just standing in a spot conversing with each other and asked them to get out of the building if they were going to stand around and talk. I wouldn’t ever recommend visiting this place with any age of children. It made me and several other parents very uncomfortable and upset. The restroom was also in bad shape. One of the 2 toilets was broken, the functioning one had poop all over it, the sink soaked you if you turned it on, and there was no paper products. Our entire group left before our scheduled hour was over. The price for admission is also quite high for all...
Read moreToday we thoroughly enjoyed an amazing 1.5 hour Ohio History tour! We took a homeschool group of 55, and we were divided into 4 groups. The natural history of the area, Ohio history (within the greater scope of US history), and discussions of the development of transportation, industry and economics we're beautifully woven together with the rich family history of the Piatt family. (Think -the patriarch was a secretary to General George Washington during the Revolutionary War!) Students and parents were drawn into the story by assuming the characters of several generations of family members and following them as time progressed. I HIGHLY recommend visiting these local treasures! The drive is gorgeous and the Ohio Caverns are also close. As a side note, Margaret Piatt is so organized and an absolute delight to work with! This will not...
Read moreA beautiful home! Wish they had a video about the history of the property. Too much to read. I took pictures of all the plaques, and can hopefully read them all at a later date. All the antiques were amazing! Even found a tunnel running from where the green house use to be to a part of the yard. The very last picture is of the Mac a Chee castle that is not currently open to the public but is being turned into a wedding venue. And we did not walk to check out the log cabin that's still standing on the property. That's older than the castle itself. We're older folks and can't do all that walking after viewing the first floor and the second floor of the castle. But the grounds are beautiful...
