I've been wanting to visit here for literally YEARS so it was an absolute joy to finally be able to do so. The town fair happening outside was a lovely bonus addition!
You can visit the ground floor of the museum for free; there's a $5 fee (as of November 2023) to go upstairs. But of course you MUST go upstairs since from there you can see the whole courthouse and sit in the galleries. It's self-guided so you can see whatever you like and spend as long as you like; it's uncanny how similar it all looks to the movie (though as they'll tell you when you arrive, nothing was actually filmed there - it was meticulously recreated on a Hollywood sound stage).
If you're a Mockingbird fan then this is a must. Hopefully you'll get a few moments when there's no one else too close by, so you can sit on a bench seat and look down into the main room and hear the echo - "Miss Jean Louise, stand up. Your...
Read moreWe saw the play,"To Kill A Mockingbird," there at 2pm on a Saturday. This play was excellent, and the atmosphere really brought it home. We learned a lot from the museum, which augments the play and the area well. It does not take very long to go through the entire place. Act I of the play is outside on the grounds of the Courthouse Museum. The second Act takes place in the courtroom inside the museum. The gift shop is very pleasant. The downtown square around the museum has boutiques, a thrift shop, and restaurants. I recommend arriving early so you can spend the day cruising the museum, shops, and restaurants prior...

The museum is an unguided tour of the courtroom and the little adjacent rooms. It's in one of these rooms that a video is playing. It's on this video that my grandmother speaks about her experience growing up in Monroeville. I took my son & my niece to see that video, and then we spent a few minutes in the courtroom. My great-great grandfather (and their great-great-great grandfather) was a judge in that courtroom, so that was pretty cool to...
