What a great little ski hill, and not as "small" as we expected it to be! The snow conditions were excellent, there was zero to very mild wind on the runs (they mention that you might get wind at the top, but the runs are all on the sheltered north slope once you're skiing), the views are GORGEOUS, and the staff are friendly. The lines are either very short or non-existent, in spite of our being there during a holiday on a long weekend (for which they also had some fun special events.) This was our first visit here, we decided to try it out instead of going to Big Mountain as we've always done, and we are so glad we did. My 21-year-old daughter commented that she'd prefer to return to Blacktail for future ski trips versus Big Mountain, in fact. For one thing, the lack of crowds makes a big difference, especially once reaching the top of Big Mountain where there's always a slough of people and you have to ski carefully towards your selected runs (usually in socked-in conditions) to avoid colliding with others. When at Big Mountain, we spend almost our entire day on the back side, which is maybe a third of the total terrain anyways. So, Blacktail essentially being the same sort of terrain as Big Mountain's back side, and literally HALF the price, the decision to go was a no brainer. The minimal line-ups, friendly staff, great snow, and astounding views were the pleasant surprise! A couple of points to note, the access road is quite long, a good 20 to 30 minutes on windy, snowy, sometimes slippery road through the hills that ends at the top of the mountain, from which you ski down into the runs. The road is well-plowed and seems gravelled, but I'd still recommend you have winter tires and/or AWD or 4WD. Also, the menu options are limited, so if you have any specific dietary needs, check their menus online before you go and bring food as needed. That said, the prices are probably the most reasonable I've ever seen at a ski resort, we found the quality to be really good, and the lodge is spacious and clean. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a nice ski hill with good terrain, conditions, minimal line-ups, good pricing, and without all of the hooplah of the...
Read moreI have been going to blacktail mountain since my fourth grade of school (2005). I cannot count how many times I've skied here, but I hadn't been to the mountain in the last 4 year so this is my fresh impression.
Blacktail mountain is a great place for beginners or anyone wanting a cheaper alternative than whitefish. 20$ for a day pass is such a great price for all they offer. The mountain is much smaller but the runs are still great and offer a wide variety. It's very easy to cover the entire mountain in a day. Chairlifts run perfectly, never have lines, (they run a little slow) and they have a T bar area for beginners. Staff are nice and the bar food is great. Drinks are rather expensive but I am sure that's just the price you have to pay for alcohol at the top of a mountain.
One star down because the rental equipment is definitely showing age. I had to try on 4 different pairs of ski boots till I found a comfortable pair. Aside from that issue the rental staff were very compliant with my concerns over comfort with the equipment and my issue was resolved very smoothly without any conflict.
All in all, I had a great experience today in the end and hope blacktail is here to stay and definitely recommend it to anyone of any skill group whether you...
Read moreSkiied Blacktail Christmas Day 2019. Pros: Not crowded, easy to get in/out, friendly staff, cosy little bar at the lodge with nice snowy views. Cons: There wasn't tons of snow so they only had 2 lifts open, and of the available trails, most were blacks (which would have been fine with me since I'm an experienced skier that regularly does ski blacks and double blacks), but these blacks were short and NOT steep. Very low on the challenge scale and very short runs, to the point where it didn't even feel worth it. I assume if there is a good snow base and more trailss open, it would have been a much different story. FYI, seems like a GREAT place to learn or for beginner/moderates, but I'd stay away if you are looking for long challenging runs, unless there is tons of snow and all the runs are open. I went to Big Mountain (Whitefish) which is about an hour from.here last week.whixh was much better, but also more of a "resort" and with that, long lines at the...
