If I could give them zero stars, I would.
The history and curation of the building and it's artifacts are great.
However, all those positives are overshadowed by the fact that the on duty curator was blatantly racist. After visiting for twenty minutes and being friendly, he got a little too comfortable and launched into the topic of slavery. He claimed that slavery was "not real" and advised us to watch a YouTube video called "The Truth About Slavery."
My husband and I were deeply unnerved by how he spoke about black people and slavery. When my husband and I didn't agree with him, he started to talk about how reparations to black people are inappropriate because "they weren't slaves" and it was like "a man paying child support to a woman he never met." He felt black people aren't owed anything because slavery didn't directly affect them.
As a native american whose family survived residential school, I can say first hand that generational trauma is absolutely real. Black people whose family members were slaves still suffer the consequences in our country.
This was completely inappropriate of him to speak to us about. It had nothing to do with Butch Cassidy. If you want your business to continue you should not allow this man to discuss his personal issues with your visitors.
Absolutely disgusted. I don't recommend visiting here unless you're tolerant of racist...
Read moreGreat museum, got to meet the owner when we arrived, and he was very passionate about the history of the place. No entrance fee, donations appreciated. The souvenirs were good quality and the prices were very acceptable. I forgot to get the name of the gentleman who was working that day, but he could regale you with stories about the area, and of course, stories about Butch Cassidy as long as you could listen. No feeling of a tourist trap at all, just a great place to learn some history. They also confirmed that I was right all along; Butch survived the encounter with the Bolivian Army portrayed at the end of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. 😁 The only reason that I might not go back is that I don't know how much more I could discover, but if I'm in the area again, I would stop in just to say Hi, it was that fun and friendly of a...
Read moreA friend of mine mentioned that I should try this place out if I were ever in the area. I've been to the Butch Cassidy homestead house near Circleville Utah, but I didn't know that there was a museum in Montpelier, right inside the bank that he helped to Rob. It was a n interesting place to visit. The caretaker was enthusiastic, and a great storyteller. He helped us understand the history and some of the situation. It's very interesting to hear these stories that are so old, and because of lack of technology, there's still so much that's unknown. Still, there are also some very interesting antique pieces in the time. That are worth seeing also while...
