Pros: potentially an outstanding hiking experience.
Cons: some trails aren’t well maintained, but the issue is expertise of trail management, which is poor. They’re doing a lot of work, and I’m sure they’re short on budget and short of volunteers, but the real problem is that they don’t know how to properly do the details. There are many unauthorized trails, almost none of them blocked off and none blocked off correctly. They don’t understand about hiding or burying decommissioned trails. They don’t block off old trails in the proper places. At several intersections, where a trail makes a 90 degree turn, the trail sign on the post is on one piece of wood, suggesting that the trail goes straight. Those intersections need two pieces of wood. Is wood that expensive? Does it take that long to stencil a second sign? At one intersection they’re redoing, they haven’t moved the post to the new spot. And the Nike area is utterly unmarked. I tried to complete a loop but had to turn back around that area because it was literally impossible to find the real trail. Signage doesn’t have to be expensive. Blocking off an old or false trail can be done with a log or for the cost of several screws, with free scrap 2x4s. If I lived in the area, I’d offer...
Read moreWas looking for a new place with water to take my dog. This place is great. Trails we walked are nice. The cave was cool Not as crowded as montour trail which I like. Very peaceful. Lots to see. If you like nature you'll love this. Great to take your dog,let him run threw the water and on the trails . He had a blast in the water. we will be going here more often. Great place to go on a warm day. .wish I'd have found this along time ago.
Update: after a 3 1/2 hr hike on the trails i gotta say they need to be marked better or tell you how far you've gone. We kinda got lost for about a hr. Finally found the oil wells sign and found our way out after another hour. It's a beautiful trail but that's just way to long to not know where you are, or see any sign . By the time we got out my poor dog and myself were...
Read moreThe Montour Woods Conservation Area is a beautiful slice of nature that will have you thinking you've traveled far from the city.
There is ample flora and fauna in a variety of landscapes. It is clear that the folks caring for this land really want it to be somewhere special.
Near the parking areas, the trails are clearly marked with signs. However, deeper in the park, the signage is less-clear or missing.
Luckily there is little parking, making the trails mostly empty of other people, which makes it very likely that you'll get to see some of the native fauna that call the conservation area home.
That being said, during my most recent visit, several cyclists were not yielding to hikers. Also, only a couple of them were...
