The Pecos Wilderness is a heavily forested rugged mountain land; ranging from 8,400 to over 13,000 feet in elevation. Truchas Peak, at 13,103 feet, is the second highest point in New Mexico. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains, prominently visible from the city of Santa Fe, run northeast to southwest across Pecos Wilderness. I visited here with my parents in April 2007. See photos; taken along route 475.

Backpacking late July '24. Absolutely beautiful. Camped at Pecos Baldy Lake and summited East Pecos Baldy. Also hiked along Trailriders Wall. All gorgeous.

Every turn there is something to see. Just amazing. We watched some guys fly fishing and were pulling out trout left and right. So much cooler up here too.

There is a special and unique beauty to this place that is hard to describe without witnessing it firsthand. A backpacking trip from the south to north end of the wilderness is an amazing experience with days spent hiking for miles above treeline. Some very remote parts of the wilderness have rarely been visited by humans. I hope people continue to take care of...

Backpacking: We started from the parking lot of the ski resort and made our way up and then down to Lake Katherine where we camped over night. The next day we hiked up Mt. Baldy. This hike was 17 miles round-trip. If you decide to visit, do it in October when the Aspen forests are changing color. Great place. I hope to return someday and do it...
