Petit Jean’s Gravesite, located at Stout’s Point in Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas, offers visitors a blend of natural beauty, romantic legend, and historical significance. Scenic Beauty and Accessibility Perched on the east brow of Petit Jean Mountain, the gravesite provides sweeping views of the Arkansas River Valley. An elevated, barrier-free walkway with interpretive exhibits allows visitors of all abilities to enjoy the panorama and learn about the area’s history. The Legend of Petit Jean According to local lore, Petit Jean was a young French woman who disguised herself as a cabin boy to accompany her fiancé on an expedition to the New World. Falling ill near the mountain, she revealed her true identity before passing away and was buried atop the mountain, which now bears her name. Visitor Experience Visitors often describe the site as peaceful and well-maintained, making it a perfect spot for reflection and photography. The combination of natural splendor and poignant storytelling creates a memorable experience. Additional Attractions While at Petit Jean State Park, consider exploring other notable sites such as Cedar Falls, Rock House Cave with ancient pictographs, and various scenic overlooks like the Mary Ann Richter and CCC Overlooks. Final Thoughts Whether you’re drawn by the legend, the views, or the tranquility, Petit Jean’s Gravesite offers a unique and enriching stop within Arkansas’s first state park.

A great spot to stop if you are looking for a wonderful view of the Arkansas River! There is plenty of interpretation about the point and a boardwalk area to see different views. There is even a spot where you can walk out on the bluff rocks if you want to see the view without hindrance. Make sure to check out Petit Jean's grave and the old stone building/lodge. The wall niches in the stone walls are so cool!

This is an Arkansas treasure! The back story is sad and sweet, but the legend and the place rate at the top. When visiting the State Park, this is a must stop for all visitors.

My wife and I took our 15 ft camper trailer there to watch the solar eclipse in 2024. Arriving early we parked our trailer in an unmarked pull-off and spent 6 hours unmolested. At 2am State Park law enforcers woke us up and told us to move out of the park. Asking what specific law I broke, they threatened arrest and impoundment of our rig. Returning early the next morning we found all the waysides cordened off forcing us back out of the park. Beautiful place but we will never return because of the poor treatment...
