This state park located in Morro Bay is a real gem. It's about 2 1/2 miles from the downtown Morro Bay area with plenty of restaurants and shopping. They have a shuttle bus in the summer on weekends and you can ride it for only $1 each way. The shopping center is a fairly long walk, take the shuttle or drive there. Parking is widely available in the shopping area.
The park is a very nice campground, spots are not too close and it's very quiet at night after hours. They have fairly clean restroom facilities ( for a campground). Don't expect it to be like a Hilton Hotel. You have to use tokens for the showers, and they sell them in the park. This park doesn't use quarters. The only thing you need to know is that it takes a while for the showers to get hot water.... and, it's not consistent. My recommendation is to take a shower during the day when it's not too cold...
They have 30 sites with electric power and water if you have an RV. If not, it's dry camping. And, the prices are $50 with power and $35 without power.
There's a very nice walk to the estuary and a restaurant close by near the Marina. The Marina restaurant is fine, but, there's many other choices in the village.
Make reservations 6 months in advance.
Finally, be sure to take some warm clothes and sweatshirts with you. It gets much colder than you might expect in the summer. I'm told that October and November are actually warmer in Morro Bay, but, I have not experienced that yet.
Driving there is easy and it's not that far away from Cambria and Hearst Castle..... worth a day trip to both locations. And, check out Harmony, CA. If you blink, you'll miss it, but, it was a delightful stop and...
Read moreMorro Bay is a beautiful place, but the Morro Bay State Park Campground leaves a lot to be desiredđ„ș! PLEASE READ ALL It's hard to find, and is not well maintained. Ranger Ken was very nice and helpful. Our fifth wheel trailer accommodates 10. Our daughter drove up to stay and was told she would have to park her car off the grounds. We asked to reserve a site for her car as this place was not even half full and was told NO THEY ARE FULL! A nice family camping next to us allowed her to park behind their motorhome. There's still wonderful people in this world. My sister came up the next day and took us to see the Cambria lights marketplace (definitely a place to see). Ranger Ken was working and we asked if there were any sites available to park 2 cars. He kindly found us a site for the 2 vehicles. Yes, we paid for the additional site, which we didn't mind paying. Campers need to be AWARE this PARK has NO accommodations for extra vehicles. Extra vehicles NEED to be parked downtown...okay, that's a LONG walk for your elderly! Most of us do not mind paying an extra fee to park family vehicles. That's what camping is ALL ABOUT! WE STAYED 3 NIGHTS AND THIS PARK WAS 1/2 full the entire timeđ€đ€! We will...
Read morePart 2 of my review , There is a shortage of Rangers so they take what they can get..Morro Bay Campground and the surrounding campgrounds and the area these people patrol , Hearst Castle down to Pismo dunes and maybe beyond, are in need of a real shake up , a woman on the Beach in Pismo with her tiny children was written a ticket for over $1,000 bucks or something like that because her tiny children playing in the sand had dug up some tiny little clams . the Ranger let me guess who wrote the huge ticket instead of teaching the children how to rebury the small clams . The woman got a reduction in her fine from the Judge who seems to be a nice person...Taxpayers pay for the Campground and all the people who work there and then they are subject to two Bad Calif State Park Rangers that have some sort chip on their shoulders and have found employment where they can be Aholes and get away with it....The Calif Park system needs to treat the taxpayers better and dump those two bad apple Park Rangers their supervisor knows who they are.... Watch your back side if you stay anywhere between Hearst Castle and Pismo beach.... someone parks in your camp spot to visit you 90 buck ticket goes to 230 real...
