I was able to return to Echo Lake recently and I noticed something very disturbing. The last time I enjoyed the lake in 1969 the bottom near the shoreline was made up of rounded rocks with crayfish crawling around. The water was crystal clear with 25 to 35 feet of visibility depending if the sun was out. When I visited the lake this summer, I walked down to the dock and then looked down into the water. In 2 feet of water I noticed that the rocks were no longer visible like I remembered. The rocks are now covered up by a thick layer of sediment or something and the crayfish are gone now too. Granted it has been a long time since I have been there, but I have not forgotten the impression the lake made on me. I especially remember the crayfish as I had never seen them before.
