For years I have come to Gunners Pool to camp even hike the Sylamore Creek Trail. This year I was extremely disappointed. First, dogs were running everywhere off leashes even though the rule is dogs are to be leashed or tied up to eliminate what happened where a dog came into our camp searching out our tied up dog. The owners of the dog got upset I yelled at their dog. Sorry not my problem. Second, if you don’t want to hear generators running all night, don’t come to Gunners Pool as no one observes the rules of quiet after 10pm even though it states this on the poster board and yes it even states for generators. Third, rangers used to patrol this camp at night to make sure these things are adhered too now there’s no rangers that patrol. Forth, I smelled more mariqiana from the creek to the camp. I’m going to find a new place even though I love this area. Sad this wonderful camp is going down hill. I will be calling the ranger service after...
Read moreThe Ozark and St. Francis NF. Is one of my favorite places on earth. Gunner Pool is the first place I camped there back in the early 1980s. I have decades of fond memories beginning at this camp ground. This last week I took the grand kids camping at Gunner Pool. Although slightly worn down and a small bee infestations it still had the charm I remember as a child. Two of the best 5 mile and under hiking trails in my experience. Me and the kids hiked Barkshed to Gunner Pool one afternoon. It had a very high cliff on the Gunner end. Great for pics. Gunner Pool also had the best swimming holes and areas on the Sandstone Creek. If you can't rough out a little, stay at the Blanchard Springs. If you like your camp just a little "wilderness" Gunner Pool...
Read moreGunner Pool has always been one of my favorite spots to camp. It has been a couple of decades since I have been there but visited in August with some of my scouts. I like that the camp is a primitive camp and the ample space between camps. Hiking is superb on trails with incredible scenery including bluffs, streams, ample wildlife and seclusion. My only complaint is that the outdoor privy must not have been pumped out or cleaned recently. Flies were horrible as was the smell. The flies were in all the camp sites and were quite a problem when we were cooking causing a very unsanitary condition, the worst I have ever experienced. I hope it was an isolated incident but can't be sure. I will return and report after...
