I love this place and I have been here several times over the years, and every time is different. The short relatively easy hike in takes about 20 minutes following a very well established trail. You'll know you are getting close when you begin to hear the falls. The forest is beautiful on the way in and very peaceful. The falls themselves are amazing and the trail maintenance folks have built a few overlooks so that you can safely view the falls from different angles. The side trails lead up and down Moxie Stream for additional perspectives. A series of small falls lead up to the big drop, and the gorge continues to the streams confluence with the Kennebec River. A great hike for individuals, couples, and families as children of all ages should have little difficulty managing the main trail. If you're rafting, camping, or just passing through the area it is worth the time to stop in and take the hike. Easy to find from the road with free parking and no charge to hike the trail. Stop and enjoy the wonder that is...
Read moreThis is a nice hike through the woods I think it's about a 1 mile walk, perhaps a little bit more, but the hike is pretty easy and it's an enjoyable thing for families to view the falls on the kennebec River.
Caution to parents with younger children. Make sure you keep them close when you get to the top of the viewing station. There are some places that you don't want young children to get next to because it's about 100 ft. Drop into the gorge if they don't stay behind the barriers.
My mother has visited several times. We go up to a crabapple whitewater rafting company and it's only a few miles from the trailhead so my mother's 82. Now it's not out of the question for the older ones. If you get a little tired on the walk, take a rest and bring some water with you. It's always enjoyable to walk...
Read moreThis is a very nice wide trail to the falls. The trail is mostly pretty level until you get close to Moxie Stream and the falls. The steeper parts have wooden stairs and also walkways in different spots on the trail. This trail is good for all ages and abilities. There are a few wooden decks up above the falls in a few places with excellent views. There a few pools above and below the falls that many go swimming in. This area is part of the Colburn Land Trust. It is good to be aware when you are in the pools or close to stream as periodically during the day the dam is opened and can raise the water levels 5 feet in minutes! Parking at the trailhead is ample and off...
