Moraine is one of the most complex state parks I've been to. Some of this is due to the old railroad that lies under the lake when it was flooded. Many roads led up to the tracks, but now they dead end at the lake. This results in the need to go in and out, in and out, all over the park. Let's start with the McDanel's area just off rt 79. Here you'll find a gift shop, bicycle rental, boat tours of the lake, a boat launch and a large fishing pier. Heading east on North Shore Drive there's a group camping area, 11 modern cabins, and a swimming beach. Windsurfing is good at Barber's Point. Next will be the Watts Bay Marina which provides moorings for sailboats and catamarans, and then the Davis Hollow Marina can moor close to 700 vessels. Boats up to 20 HP are allowed. There used to be an education center here, but you can catch the Jennings Education Center as you loop around Rt 8 to Moraine's south side. Park Road leads to a boat ramp, fishing pier, waterfowl view area, a group camping area and an oil field exhibit. The next entrance on Pleasant Valley Road has a non-motorized boat launch, a swimming beach, picnic tables, fishing pier and motorboat launch. Finally, there's another boat launch at Porters Cove. Arthur Lake is not a wide lake but long with lots of coves. There are at least 6 hiking trails, 7 miles of paved bike trails, 6 miles of mountain biking trails and 20 miles of horseback trails. Winter activities include cross country skiing, snowmobiling, sledding, ice skating, ice boating and ice fishing. For events at this park visit: events dcnr pa For more information: pa parks and...
Read moreThe park was beautiful and I’ll end there. I visited with my children for the first time last August and after a day at the lake beach we packed up and headed home. It was a beautiful still day with no clouds and no wind, on my way out of the park i noticed a tree overhanging the road had started shaking vigorously. I was doing the very slow and safe speed limit and half of the tree fell on my car and across the road.
Thank goodness my sunroof wasn’t open so my 3 and 6 year old didn’t get hurt. So many people stopped to ensure i was ok as my windscreen had smashed etc but who didn’t stop to make sure i was ok, park staff…..they moved the tree out of the road and drove off.
This could have been a cyclist or walking pedestrian and it would have sent them to hospital or worse.
On further inspection the tree was rotten hence why it fell on a clear still day. I wish they would inspect trees that at least hang over the roads for safety purposes but i know that’s a stretch.
I will not be returning to this park again and would not recommend to anyone else unless they want a Grand Cherokee totaled by other...
Read moreMy partner and I finally took our new kayaks to Marine State Park this past weekend, and it completely exceeded our expectations. Since we have our own gear, we headed straight to the designated launch area, which was easily accessible and well-maintained.
The scenery from the water is simply breathtaking. We spent a solid three hours exploring the calm, crystal-clear coves. The water was so peaceful, offering perfect reflections of the lush, green shoreline. We glided past rocky outcrops and spotted herons and even a curious seal that followed us for a short while. The complete absence of motorized boat noise made the experience incredibly immersive and relaxing.
What really makes this park special is how well-preserved and untouched it feels. It's a haven for anyone looking to truly escape and connect with nature. The park itself was clean, and the other visitors we encountered were respectful and friendly.
For fellow kayak owners, this is a must-visit destination. We're already planning our next trip to explore the smaller islands we saw in the distance. A perfect ten out of...
