Parking lot in desperate need of an upgrade, but this was one of the highlights of our few days in Pictured Rocks. We got there around 8:30am on a Tuesday, the lot was less than half-full. By the time we'd completed our hike, there were several dozen cars parked along the road.
As for the hike itself, we challenged our kids (ages 9 & 6) to do a 10-mile loop and they actually enjoyed the entire day. With all the detours and extra exploring we did, AllTrails recorded it at 13.6 miles, in about 7.5 hours. If you're going to take that on, make sure you bring plenty of water and snacks/lunch. And take plenty of breaks if the kids need it.
We hiked from the trailhead past Chapel Falls, down to Chapel Beach. The Falls there were pretty cool, but Chapel Rock was the first "wow!" moment of the hike. We continued down onto Chapel Beach, then back up along the bluffs, toward the Grand Portal Point. Innumerable places along this stretch (something like 4 miles or so) that afford spectacular views of the picturesque bluffs, and the amazing geological formations.
After making it to the Mosquito River area, we headed back inland toward Mosquito Falls (less impressive than Chapel Falls, IMO), and finally to the trailhead. If 10+ miles sounds daunting, you can do separate loops to Chapel or Mosquito Beaches that are 4 or 5 miles long apiece. Ultimately, I'm glad we did the full thing, as the views along the lake were stunning.
We found Chapel Rock to be a nice first place to stop for a break. Grand Portal Point was an excellent place to eat lunch, and it seemed several other groups hiking thought likewise. We also detoured onto the rocks at the lake a little east of Mosquito Beach (shortly before the trail heads back to the parking lot). Though a little slick in spots with algae, it was a great...
Read moreTrail hiking during summer and falls is awesome. Specially Fall when the color starting to die. This time you will feel like in heaven. it is sometime exhausting while trying to cover the Chapel loop. But the falls and beach will give you a great prize and surprises. Dont miss doing the hiking there. Always take water and light food with you. hydrate yourself. Totally different experience. I wish the area would have good washroom facility. I dont think it would hurt anyone to do modern washroom a couple on the way. Chapel falls is kind of confusing area sometime. If you want to get a good view make sure you are passing the bridge while walking from the trailhead or parking. there is a stage on the other side which gives nice view. If it is not raining then the falls look like a drain. Sorry to say that. hahahha! Chapel beach is awesome. Nice place to take your GF/BF. Keep sanitizer of any kind with you. I did not take any picture because I was enjoying my whole chapel loop hiking and nature. Read moreGreat 10-13 Mile hike, but may not be for beginners. FOR GOOGLE MAPS USERS!! If you are driving to the trailhead and coming from H-58 (Adams Trail) sometimes Google maps will tell you to turn right off of chapel Rd into a trail or two tracks. You can take this way but it's gets very very narrow. We took this way driving in and my Subaru outback barely squeezed through. Stay on Chapel Rd! Picture included shows where not to turn.
The Hike from the trailhead, to chapel rock to mosquito beach and back is a pretty long 10 mile hike. This was the longest hike i have done but it took a lot longer than i anticipated. We brought two small meals and both me and my fiance had two 30oz bottles of water, by the end we were whooped and went through all of our water and food. Its a beautiful hike but be warned there are ground bees all around the shoreline section of the trail. we both got stung. we also went after it had rained for two days so it was a bit of a muddy mess. There are a lot of sections walking over thick tree roots so be prepared to take it slow so you don't roll an ankle. Take these into consideration before going.
In the end its worth it for the breath...
