Muddy, steep hike with a lot of uneven ground, but not too long. Second half of the hike is on pretty level ground. Be aware that the beach is not the best for swimming, and please don't leave your clothes or trash on the beach!
There are lots of loose, flat rocks at the falls. Please do not stack them, especially in the water! Rock stacks interfere with the natural habitats of bugs, animals, and other organisms and they detract from the natural beauty of the area. Please also do not build dams or other obstructions in the falls, this also interferes with aquatic organisms and the natural waterflow and erosion processes.    Read moreAdmittedly I can't speak for the sand beach itself, but several hundred feet to the northeast there's a pretty cool place to wade on the rocks, which we did as a brief diversion from hiking along the North Country Trail. The rock there is certainly unique looking, plus some cool places at the little point where water and wind have worn away some nifty features. The shelf sticks out 50-100 feet or more from the shore and is a pretty good place to wade. My feet were actually feeling a little swollen from having hiked about 10 miles, and they were noticeably less uncomfortable after soaking them in the cold Superior water for about 30 minutes, which made the final 3+ miles of our hike...
