The sign said Cherokee lake recreation area. It was a dirt road with swampy areas on the left, then the road ends at a neat little park. There were kaki boaters and a lone fisherman on the fishing pier. We stopped and walked the park to the fishing pier. The pier was low on the water and was built in 1992. I asked the gentleman if he caught any fish. He said do no not yet. After I asked if the lake or small pond area opened to a bigger body of water, he was not sure, but said there was a map up towards the covered pavilion. It wasn't until we got back home that the area was located on such big impoundment of water. Going from lake Cherokee to Hibbert branch, on into Persimmon lake, and much much more. A lot of water to fish and discover. The recreation area was very clean and peaceful. I would have liked the time to explore it more. Hope you enjoy more photos.

Read moreGreat, pretty secluded spot that has great potential for many things. Bring your dog, check. Have a picnic, check. Throw out a line and fish from the dock, check. Paths to walk off lunch after using one of the provided BBQs, check. Only drawback which I'm not going to take stars off for is that the road in is a bit narrow which if this place had a decent amount of people driving in and out, it could pose some issues. Otherwise, another postcard picture spot here in Murphy NC with a lovely lakeside park for everyone to enjoy. Part of me says I'm giving away a good secret here but it is so peaceful and pretty I must share. Would be rude not to. So pack a lunch, get the kids and dogs in the car, maybe a rod and reel and go see why Murphy...
Read moreI don't give many 5 stars but I'd give this park 4 1/2 if I could. The road in is not long and is hard-packed gravel. I rode my motorcycle in with no problem. There's plenty of parking and a couple paved, handicap spots, near the restrooms. The restrooms have flush toilets and sinks. There is also a pavilion with picnic tables and a nice fishing dock that are both wheelchair accessible. There are ample picnic tables with grills on the lawn and park benches here and there for relaxing. If you're in a walking mood there is a woods trail along the waters edge that leads to the dam. It's an easy walk (1/3 mile) but watch out for tripping...
