Closest Buffalo herd to Chicago, near the various state parks around Oregon. No visitors’ center, but a nice outdoor display and short trail. You may not see the herd and will have to check from the different pull-offs at the edges of the preserve, sadly, these are not well marked so compare with the maps.

There was a nice breeze, a fairly well maintained trail, a pavilion with some things to learn and a whole lot of nature. Sooo much nature. 10/10 would sneeze again.

My brother brought us here & I am so happy he did - we had fun walking the trails & talking with the volunteers! Great for all ages - check it out!!!

We went to the Autumn on the Prairie Fest held in September at the Nachusa Grasslands which is owned by the Nature Conservatory.

This annual event is open to the public and is free to attend except for a $5 per car parking fee.

They offer Riding Prairie Tours to look for bison, guided hiking tours,a discovery tent ,food, drinks and music.

Shuttle service is provided from the parking area if needed.

Donations and tshirts for purchase are available.

This grasslands preserve is over 4000 acres and consists of remnant prairies, woodlands and wetlands being reconnected through restoration by volunteers to create one of the largest grasslands in Illinois.

Definitely...

So glad we visited. So beautiful and peaceful. Loved the open air, outdoor visitor center. Walking trail near welcome center wasn't strenuous, one incline on end of path. Loved having signs along path identifying different plants, flowers, & grasses. Didn't see any bison though we heard them. Take your time on the walking path, very serene listening to wind through tall grasses. Great for nature photography. Drove around perimeter looking for bison, no luck. Bathrooms were very clean & large for an outhouse. Permanent fixture, not typical green plastic portable outhouse. Beautiful open plains. Loved this visit more...

We're homeschoolers so love finding places like this for some live learning experiences. You can talk about the importance of prairie all you want but letting a child see it all in action gives a much deeper meaning and appreciation. Thankfully as we pulled up on our first visit we got to see a herd right away which was so exciting! We did try again another time and didn't see any so either way be prepared that you might not see them. There is a small parking lot with compost toilets and an area with info and a few small...
