Some of these low rated reviews are hilarious. The Hiawatha National Forest is a huge chunk of the U.P. There are many camp sites all over from sites that look like a refugee camp to remote sites that you hike several miles to. If you need power, showers and to be close to other people there are many different camps that offer that. If you want to truly get away from it all and go somewhere beautiful, you will need to work for it. I’ve hiked all over this park and camped both at sites with amenities and hiked in to remote sites where I won’t see many people and I prefer the later. If you’re willing to work for it you will see places that you wouldn’t otherwise. There are beaches that resemble something you’d expect to see in the Caribbean. Also, if you think you’ll see wolves, bear and Moose, go to the Zoo because you are not going to see them in the wild unless you know what you’re doing or are very lucky (or unlucky). I once saw a bear run across a road and that was the only time I saw one in all my years of hiking there. Lots of birds, chipmunks and raccoons. Coyotes can be heard most nights. There is a cool bear ranch called Oswald’s in Newberry where there are 30+ rescued bears and you can get your picture taken with a cub most of the time. Marquette is a great little college town with all the things you’d want in a city so you could design a cool trip where you do some backpacking and rustic camping and later find a shower and hit the town. Digs is a pub in town that has good burgers and a beer selection. If you’re in Munising I’d recommend Taco Primo, it’s a little pricey but the food is pretty good and there are a ton of options around there. Simply put, If you just drive though the UP you’ll only see trees and you’ll be out of cell tower range for much of it. You have to dig into the area and find the gems, most of which are just off those “boring” tree lined highways. I’d rather be in the UP than Florida but that’s...
Read moreThe possibilities are endless... There is a total of 42 miles of lake shore. In the 42 miles there's 73000+ archers to run jump and play in.. I myself have climbed almost every hill here, and waterfall. I also love the wildlife you see along the ways. I have seen deer, bear, fox, bunnies, wolves, squirrels, snakes, frogs, and even captured pictures of grasshopper, dragonfly, and 9 varieties of fish.. (I just made a video of two butterflies yesterday on one of my nightly hikes.) Thought that was unique. There are many waterfalls throughout the national forest, some are easier to get to than others. But the view is always worth a hike.. Bringing family friends and pets along in the adventures is an awesome way to bond and experience memories that last a lifetime. Remember to help us preserve the lakeshore. Although there is a lot of fun and entertainment, there's also a lot to be preserved.. When climbing the rock formations keep in mind those have been there many years and the winters are hard on them.. Therefore the rocks/ledges can break/give away. So use safety please. There is even trash cans located at most national forest locations.. Sometimes you have to hold it till you get to the can but our lands deserve the good treatment. As long as we are preserving the land while enjoying its benefits we are all happy. With that said you can not remove the rocks plants or sand from any national...
Read moreThis was a dream come true and yet had it's challenges. I always wanted to camp in this forest and Oct 2021 we finally did. We stayed at a campsite on clear lake dispersed campground. There was NO information of ANY nearby (like, nearby within the forest and not to the nearest town over an hour drive away) for water or worse yet an outhouse, so if you're tent camping here, you'll need TP and a shovel and to bring your own water. What was a huge bummer is that we had to stay clear from the normal site area. There was SO much trash including a huge rubber tire and even molding pancakes that a previous user just tossed to the side. Our pup had no problem finding it and it was no fun to better dispose of it without getting it all over us. The lake, though, totally what I had drempt it would be like....oh, and thank goodness I had downloaded the gps coordinates for our site because it was the only way to find it so if you don't have that, good luck! The forest walking and surroundings, though, were constantly awe inspiring and so refreshing. Perhaps if we had stayed at a...
