really a beautiful park. and big compared to some of the other PA State Parks. Worth a visit. Sand was brutally hot the day we went, but there were some shade trees and picnic tables and the water was great. The bathhouse was very clean and surprisingly spacious. They even offered a family restroom. I am so, so, so tempted to knock off one star because of two things: the beach is a hike from the parking lot. There are accessible spaces on site, but no loading/unloading spots. You need to trek all your beach/picnic gear in quite a distance. If you have trouble walking, or can't haul a loaded cooler very far, you are not going to like this. the smell is real. Not at the beach, but at the campsites. lots of other reviewers mention it. I gagged and it if persisted, would have had to leave. But there were rains the days I went and I think that kept the smell down. definitely noticeable, definitely something you would not prefer to linger within. I was in a cabin with a window fan running, and as I mentioned, there were rains, so never smelled anything at night. But when we were outside, from time to time you would catch the odor. Ugh! Oh - the beach smelled WONDERFUL - like blossoms. Totally different experience. The campgrounds are HUGE. Loop G is remote and pet friendly, but situated on an awkward slope. Many of the Loop G campsites are sloped and the wash house is down a steep hill from most of the sites. Be warned about Loop G! Loop D and Loop F are really terrific.Loop A looks great. I did not drive through Loop B. In the end, I won't remove that 5th star because the overall park is so wonderful, so well cared for, so roomy, and there is so much to do. It is sufficient for me to leave the warning, as...

ย ย ย Read moreShawnee has a nice mix of the things you'd want in a state park. The asymmetrical lake allows for 3 different boat launch areas and extensive shoreline to explore. There's also a boat rental here if you impulsively decide to get on the water. The lake is stocked with warm water fish and there's an ADA accessible fishing pier in the Diehl area. The swimming beach is nice, wide and attractive. There's lots of scattered picnic tables and several pavilions. I felt pavilion no. 7 was private and nice with good parking and bathrooms (see picture). There are 9 trails to hike, a disc golf field and 7.5 miles of bicycling roads. Stay overnight at one of the 190 campsites or rent a cabin or yurt. The Lakeside Lodge is more of a vacation home experience. There's also 2 educational program amphitheaters see check the park schedule for programs. Large areas are open to hunting in hunting season. Come back in the winter for snowmobiling, mostly in the north and east areas of the park. Other winter activities include cross country skiing, sledding, tobogganing, ice fishing and ice skating.
