A modest piece of hillside and mount are all that's been saved from this important battle near Nashville. Situated in a neighborhood of large homes with sprawling yards, the steep path demonstrated the fortitude of the soldiers that fought there. Monuments to the Illinois & Minnesota troops are placed along the path with an informational display of the officers and battle map. The informational sign is due for a makeover due to bleaching by the sun and scratched plexiglass. This is not an easy path and not intended for folks with mobility issues. Please be aware that this site is maintained by a volunteer group and donations. It's really sad that they had to remove the cannons due to vandalism. I will be back to bring my grandchildren when they're old enough to understand what...

Extremely well kept grounds, and a spectacular 365 degree Nashville view at top of a short hike. Replica cannons, a historical marker and photo board, and new marker with tribute to Minnesota troops who died for the Union when taking Shy's Hill on a brutally cold December day. At the peak, the grounds are cleared and never crowded. Three flag poles commemorate the Confederate Army of TN, Union Army of Minnesota, and U.S Flag. If I can find it, I'll include a picture I took 10 years ago of an Abraham Lincoln impersonator at top of battle site. Will also add the new MN marker at base of trail. Solemn, peaceful, beautiful, and well cared for by dedicated volunteers. 10 minute hike, moderate climb....

Shy's Hill is an essential stop for anybody on the battle of Nashville driving tour, or anyone who is into history, especially the civil war. The site is pretty muddy and slippery after rain so bring some heavy duty boots if you don't want to slip, and the climb up isn't too excerting, although it is a bit of a workout and steep. Other than that, there is some space for parking (not the case for other sites on the tour) and there is plenty of historical signage to explain the history and significance of the hill. At the top is a nice memorial and excellent views of the Nashville skyline through the trees. Overall it is a fun little hike and an interesting little known...

Little too hot to be hiking to the top of a hill today but I did it anyway because I like to visit battlefield sites. BATTLE OF NASHVILLE Shy's Hill On this hill was fought the decisive encounter of the Battle of Nashville December 16, 1864. At 4:15 P. M. a Federal assault at the angle on top of the hill broke the Confederate line. Col. W. M. Shy, 20th Tenn. Inf. was killed and Gen.T. B. Smith was captured. The Con federates retreated over the Over ton Hills to the Franklin Pike....

MUST VISIT Civil War site in Nashville Atop the hill there are flags representing Minnesota, the U.S. flag, and the 1st National Flag of the Confederacy. The rebels were badly whipped at the hands of James Wilson's Cavalry Corps and multiple Minnesota regiments from A.J. Smith's detachment of the Army of the Tennessee. There is a Napoleon 12-pounder facing north at the summit of Shy’s Hill, the final Confederate position at the Battle of Nashville before retreat.
