What an great place to be on the Fourth of July weekend. Entrance to everything in this spacious national park is free. Lots of exhibits inside and out and well presented. The story of homesteading and its history relationship to surrounding area very well told. There are two main buildings we saw both had gift shops. The staff greets you and will guide you through park and exhibits they are so helpful. There are two gift shops and staff greets you and is very willing to answer questions. You can even take time and research on computer your own family homesteader history. The walk around building nice exercise and very scenic farmland and nature. A most peaceful place where you can just relax hear the wind and birds and see what homesteaders saw. Lots of old farm equipment and other home and farm artifacts. We both really enjoyed our visit and it wasn't a far drive from our home state of Minnesota.

Staff is super friendly and helpful! They went above and beyond by letting us see the archives for a few minutes (appt needed but we were the only ones around that morning). The site is well maintained, tons of information available about homesteading and the westward movements. We were able to find and print patents on their computers that were from my great-great grandfathers! The site grounds are open until dusk, which includes some nice hiking trails. Really a great experience overall.

I started here and went over to the grass trails. Went 3.74 miles. Took me 1 hr 30 mins. This is a really nice trail, well maintained. You can walk over to the education center. I didn't go in this time to any of the buildings. I also went over to Freeman school house. They keep everything well maintained. The one loop trail to squatters cabin was closed. Next time, I go will be with my grandson to explore the buildings. The school is open from 1 to 4 every day now until Labor Day.

These photo's I acquired several years ago. This is the Palmer's home. The man at right is the Palmer's son, Herbert Emerson Palmer b. Oct. 19, 1872 Bear Creek, Gage Co., NE d. Feb. 3, 1960 Beatrice, Gage Co., NE m. Laura Olivia Veon b. Sept 27, 1878 Wood, Mason Co., WV d. June 6, 1978 Beatrice, Gage Co., NE; both buried Evergreen Home Memorial Park, Beatrice, Gage Co., NE. This land the house was built on first owned by my GG-Grandfather, Ismay Mumford (1st Treasurer of Beatrice, NE). Ismay sold this land to his brother Jacob Mumford (possibly another brother, John B. Mumford). Jacob Mumford/John B. Mumford sold this 160 acre section of land holdings to his bro-in-law, George Palmer. Geo. Palmer's wife, Mary Ann MUMFORD Palmer is...

When we set out on this journey to go to the Homestead National Historical Park, we were not sure we even wanted to go. We were not sure about why anyone would want to go to a park about homesteading, but we are so glad that we stopped. We were able to learn all about the first homestead in America as well as the last homestead. We learned about the history of the homestead act, and how it played a role in American history. The museum was beautiful, and well put together. The park rangers were awesome as well, working hard to share their excitement about the homestead. If you are in Nebraska, be sure to stop and...
