We got lucky! Was taking a drive through the beautiful area of Rainbow Canyon, about 20 miles away from Caliente and decide to drive to the school house! They are open the first Saturday of the month and there were two Park officials there to share the history of the school house. Being an educator it was so intriguing and full of history. Really enjoyed it and recommend stopping if you are ever out there in the first Saturday of the month! If you visit any of the other parks (Keyshawn Ryan, Cathedral Gorge) your day pass covers admission and donations...

Though the schoolhouse itself is only opened occasionally or by appointment, it is a lovely glimpse into the past. The building houses a single schoolroom (kindergarten through 8th grade were taught there), a kitchen, and a bedroom for the school teacher. Out front is some old-school playground equipment that will shock anyone used to rubberized mats and plastic structures. The drive through Rainbow Canyon is absolutely gorgeous and worth the trip on its own, just beware of flash flooding that can happen with any hint...

I travel south to Elgin from Caliente. The trip is a 21 mile drive through Rainbow Canyon on the I-317. It is like a well kept secret. Wild horses, petroglyphs, pictographs, and the train to boot. Spectacular scenery and a real intimate experience for the railroad enthusiast. When you get to the schoolhouse and see where you are at, you should take a few hours to hang out. Enjoy the train going by, it is absolutely thrilling to here that whistle. Do know that there are no facilities so, you may have to squat to pee....

A bit of a drive down a very rough road. It was paved, but flooded and full of holes in many spots. The gates were locked and zero access I am assuming due to covid, but signs to that effect would have been nice. The drive was beautiful though, and an adventure. We will probably try going again when its open. Photo was as close as we could get. I'd recommend visiting the Fourth Ward school in Virginia City, or the old school house in Smith Valley over this one at this time.

I love places that are rich in history just like this one. It's almost 100 years old, and still standing. A school that had 1st to 8th grade all in one class room. It's almost 100 years old. The teacher also lived here. The kitchen still has Jared food. Don't forget to take a look at the outhouse in the back. Bring the kids so they appreciate the comforts that schools today have. We saw the enciclopedias & I told my kids that was Google 25 years back.
