Maine's largest lake at about forty miles long and seventeen mile wide at it's widest point. Greenville greets visitors at the southern end where lodging, supplies and provisions may be acquired. A trip up the east coast will bring you to Blair hill which provides outstanding views of the lake. Further up the road will bring you to Beaver Cove, Lilly Bay State park and to Kokadjo where the pavement ends and dirt road starts.
If when leaving Greenville you travel up the west side, you will quickly reach Greenville Junction where you may visit local restaurants, taverns or go to the public boat launch and watch the seaplanes depart or land. About thirty miles further you get to the town of Rockwood. A small village which has another public boat launch and picnic area. The Moose River contributes to Moosehead lake at Rockwood. From Rockwood, Mt. Kineo can be seen from several spots. Mt. Kineo looks like half of the mountain fell into the lake. Eight hundred foot high cliffs stand guard over the area where a five hundred person luxury hotel once stood. The hotel was rebuilt several times due to fire. Every 2nd weekend in August we make a point of visiting to see the Forest Heritage Days. The logging tour is super worth the time. The old-timey logging demonstrations by the Colby college kids let you see how logging used to be. Definitely check out the logging competition: the chainsaw expertise is sure to amaze and entertain you.
