Love it out here!! It's so pretty amd there's so much to do if you love the outdoors. I'm a mountain Biker so I'm out here all the time at the Pine Flats/Oak Flats area, as well as Tunnel Canyon and Otero Canyon. Don't spend as much time by the Coyote Trail because there's too many motorcycles and 4×4s and they kinda tear up the trails. You'll see some motos in the pine flags area too but not as many.
If you're looking to hike there's lots of options and camping as well although I've ne er camped out here since I like in Albuquerque. So close from the City most trails are within 20-40 minutes from the City. Pine Flats is really nice if you're with the family and want to do a day of hiking and picnic after. They have outhouses, lots of picnic tables and space to set up games. If you're looking to hike with less people around, the Mars Court Trailhead is really nice. No tables or outhouses so be aware, there's less foot traffic but you'll run into deer and possibly wild turkeys moreoften than some of the other trails. Lots of birds too! It is Bear, mountain lion and rattlesnake country though so always be aware.if I'm by myself u bring bear spray and a dagger when I bike. If you're in a group making noise will keep most animals away and find yourself a nice...
Read moreMcGaffey Lake and Picnic area, were almost filled up with water, but the problem is the Cibola National Forest is supposed to be the ones who are taking care of the maintenance, but aren't doing anything. This is the first time I've seen it full of water in years, and I and my wife and many other people who love to fish and Picnic, would enjoy it much more if the Forestry Dept would take care of the maintenance as it is written on the board posted. This area is a great place for families to get together to Picnic and fish etc.. There is also great places to go hiking, and also there is a person who has his own Elk Ranch just a few miles away from the lake. The lake is in the beautiful Cibola National Forest Mountains, and there is a lot to do with the family, but the problem is what about the lake? The lake doesn't have a constant water inlet, and the Cibola National Forest Maintenance Crew needs to come up with a plan to keep the lake full all year round, this way families can enjoy the fishing etc.. This is what the sign indicates, that the Cibola National Forest Maintains the lake....
Read moreWe did the spring tree tail. It is an excellent trail for the New Mexico heat.
Pros: great coverage from the sun, gradual elevation in hike without steep incline like pino trail, 2.2 miles to the trail head and you can turn back around or keep going straight. This Is the tram trail and the trail is slightly longer and more difficult I wouldn't do this unless you hike often.
Cons: being a hiker for the past 3 months I've hiked over 150 miles and have done the pino trail, rinconada trail etc.. that being said this trail has a lot of rocks. Going up isn't bad if you watch your footing but going down is another story. The rocks can be smooth and you lose your grip on them. I slipped several times and tripped trying to avoid a group of people sketching flowers. Thus if you have had a ankle injury in the past I would not attempt this trail. I did not get injured but it put my ankle at very precarious angles and you could easily sprain...
