There's many trails here, one of witch is on the opposite side of the inlet, and is a near vertical climb to the top of the shelf, if you walk far I the right one you reach the highest shelf you will find the main areas of the shelf. The shelf is so large it is comparable to a two-lane highway, though you have to be careful because of the steep incline to your right side and the shelled limestone. if you continue along this path, you will find a boulder that you could climb to the top of the mountain with. You need expert climbing skills to do this, or you can continue to the right and you'll come across a couple of caves. I did find mountain lion droppings out there, so be careful when entering caves or exploring. On the opposite end of the spectrum if you go down the trail that's at the inlet is the near vertical drop down to the river that comes all the way from the Lincoln mountains in cloudcroft New Mexico, and if you walk down the river for a little bit, you will come across a beautiful but...

I went down it mostly on my butt b/c the rocks were slipping under my feet. Go about 50' or so past that and enter where the little red arrow is painted on the concrete pillar, trust me on this! Stay against the wall on your way down to the waterfall. On your way back, pass your cut-off to go back up to the parking lot and walk down the stream about 1/4-1/2 mile. Enjoy the small falls and tranquility along the way. You can either try to climb your way back up to the parking lot (not recommended), or double-back and go back up the way you came. This is a lovely trail and the waterfall is pretty. A walking stick would be helpful crossing the stream in some areas. Carry all trash out. I wish I had a small grocery bag to grab other's trash on...
Read moreWATERFALL INSTRUCTIONS: The "trail" from the lookout barrier isn't the best way down. Walk along the road about 20 feet from the end of the parking turnout (towards the tunnel). You'll jump the barrier and go over the water pipe. It will follow the cliff down into the bottom of the canyon. I have some photos of where the "trail" begins. We took the lookout way down and it was very very difficult. Very difficult. I was concerned about climbing our way out. After talking with some people along the river we learned about the easier way up/down! This is an excellent thing to stop and see! The waterfall pool was so much fun. It's pretty cold water, but very refreshing! We enjoyed this much more than the Trestle hike! Update: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE clean up after yourself if you go down to the waterfall/canyon. :) Seems like lots of junk is...
