day 6 (17jun24) sanctuary 13: looped around dam to boardwalk over marsh and beech grove island then back via sensory trail to parking - approx 1 mile. this is closest MAS to my house and I've been here many times, so did not cross street to other trail system down to bristol pond (tired after moose hill earlier today). mayapples (Podophyllum peltatum) with fruit by stream below dam. medium size northern water snake sunning itself on concrete headwall to dam outlet structure. beech grove infected with nematodes...

I can't begin to say what a nice experience we had at Stony Brook. My companion has mobility issues and it is hard for her to hike on the usual types of hiking trails. The trails at Stony Brook are well groomed, relatively wide, and not steep. They have a boardwalk out across the marsh with great views. We even saw a pair of swans! The day we visited it was damp and overcast but the mosses and lichens were glowing. It was all do beautiful!

I actually used this stop to take a nap. It was so peaceful. My wife and daughters walked all over while I napped in the rental. I was so tired. They really enjoyed the trail. They told me all about it when they returned. I really wanted to tour the area, but the family was done when I woke up from the nap. It was peaceful! I definitely recommend this stop! It was awesome to get some nap time on the trip! It would have been even better had I got to witness my little ladies having fun here....

UPDATE: Today, I came back with my 7 and 4 year old kids. There are about three spots in the wooded areas that have rocks for kids to climb on and teepees made from giant branches. We spent over an hour there, the kids had such a blast!

This place is gorgeous! Beautiful and easy walk for yourself and with kids. Boardwalk area that stretches out into some wetlands. I was able to see turtles, swans, red winged blackbirds, and...
